A little over 1 year passes between the discovery of the comet and the President's press conference to reveal it, then another year passes between the press conference and Impact (the bulk of the film). Finally, we can assume it took a few months for the waters of the tidal wave to receed prior to the President's final address in front of the Capitol building in Washington.
Elly . Jenny, who is hot on the trail of a so-called scandalous affair in the White House, converses with Secretary Rittenhouse's former secretary. The woman claims that Rittenhouse is having an affair with a woman named Elly. Jenny takes this information and runs with it, unaware that it isn't a woman named Elly, but an event called an E.L.E., extinction level event.
2 years. After Jenny stops laughing, Robin says, "You now have a stepmother, who is two years older than you." Jenny then says she has to go.
Chlorine. In the scene where Jenny and her mother, Robin, are having lunch, Robin is very depressed because Jason, her ex-husband, is marrying a young woman named Chloe. She tells Jenny that at that very moment Jason and Chlorine are now husband and wife. This makes Jenny laugh hysterically.
Beth. Beth, who has a small daughter named Kate, is Jenny's friend and mentor. Beth is MSNBC's senior reporter for the White House. And, even though she is Jenny's friend, she seems to not want Jenny to succeed. This was very evident when Jenny asks about the opening for weekend anchor.

His wife was sick. According to the journalists in the meeting, Secretary Rittenhouse resigned because his wife was sick. However, Jenny Lerner, a junior reporter for MSNBC, claims she heard that the real reason he resigned was because his wife was a drunk.
The truck driver's cigarette falls between his legs. The truck driver, who was doing too many things at once: smoking, drinking soda, and turning up the volume of the radio, dropped his cigarette between his legs. He fumbles around so as not to get burned, and in the process, he doesn't see Dr. Wolf, who by this time had stopped using his cell phone. The jeep and the truck collide, and as they collide we see the envelope, which had "Wolf-Biederman" written on it, fly out the window. This is the last we see of the truck driver and Dr. Wolf.
