A little over 1 year passes between the discovery of the comet and the President's press conference to reveal it, then another year passes between the press conference and Impact (the bulk of the film). Finally, we can assume it took a few months for the waters of the tidal wave to receed prior to the President's final address in front of the Capitol building in Washington.

Megrez. In the beginning of the movie, we see Leo Biederman and Sarah Hotchner, along with their astronomy club, star gazing. When their astronomy teacher asks Leo and Sarah to name the star constellations, Leo names two of them, but he is unsure of the third. Sarah chimes in and said that it's Megrez, but Leo is positive that it isn't. The teacher tells Leo to take a photograph and that it will be sent to Dr. Wolf.
Adrian Peakk Observatory . Dr. Marcus Wolf, the leader of Leo's and Sarah's astronomy club, works with the Adrian Peak Observatory, which is located on a hillside in Tuscon, Arizona.
Pizza with anchovies. While Dr. Wolf is researching the unidentified mass that Leo found, he's clearly eating pizza with anchovies. During his research, he discovers that it's a comet that was discovered, and so he wants to see where the comet is heading. He almost chokes on the pizza when he realizes the comet's trajectory is on a direct path to Earth. He inserts a floppy disk to copy what he is seeing on his computer screen, and races off, but not before labeling the envelope "Wolf-Biederman."

Jolt. After racing out of the observatory, Dr. Wolf jumps in his jeep and tears out of the parking space. He heads onto the highway and uses his cell phone to call NASA. We then see an eighteen wheeler speeding down the highway, and inside the truck the driver, who is smoking, leans over to take a sip of Jolt, the soda he's drinking. He also turns up the volume of the radio. He is unaware of the oncoming jeep.
The truck driver's cigarette falls between his legs. The truck driver, who was doing too many things at once: smoking, drinking soda, and turning up the volume of the radio, dropped his cigarette between his legs. He fumbles around so as not to get burned, and in the process, he doesn't see Dr. Wolf, who by this time had stopped using his cell phone. The jeep and the truck collide, and as they collide we see the envelope, which had "Wolf-Biederman" written on it, fly out the window. This is the last we see of the truck driver and Dr. Wolf.
