It is the bile of a drowned young worm. The Water of Life is the bile of a drowned, young worm. It is taken by women wanting to become Reverend Mothers, and by Paul Muad'Dib. He is the only man to ever successfully transform the poisonous water.

melange. The spice melange can only be found on one planet in the universe--Dune. With it, the Guild Navigators can travel without moving. Consuming the spice in large amounts causes the blue within blue eyes that the Freemen have.
Princess Irulan. In the novel Irulan is a historian and author of a number of books on Muad'Dib, so it is appropriate that she relays the prologue of the movie to the audience and narrates the remainder.
Irulan is played by Virginia Madsen, sister of 'Reservoir Dogs' and 'Kill Bill' actor, Michael Madsen.
Bene Tleilax. "Four planets have come to our attention regarding a plot which could jeopardise spice production..." The Spacing Guild depends on the spice to be able to travel through space. "The spice must flow."
Pain. When Paul balks at putting his hand in the box Mohiam holds a gom jabbar (a poisoned needle) to his neck. The box does indeed contain pain but "pain by nerve induction" and no actual physical harm is done.

Green and Black. The banner is seen flying over Castle Caladan and is seen several times after the Atreides arrive on Arrakis.
Shadout Mapes. In return for this Mapes warns Paul that there is a traitor within the Atreides ranks.
Piter de Vries. Piter was the one who broke Dr. Yueh's imperial conditioning, which enabled him to act as a traitor, despite the absolute trustworthiness normally associated with a Suk doctor.
Usul. Paul chooses the name Muad'Dib himself and this is his public name. Stilgar gives him the name Usul as the name by which he will be known within the tribe only. In the movie Usul is translated as "the strength of the base of the pillar" although in the book the meaning is the simpler "base of the pillar".
Dr. Kynes. Dr. Kynes is the Imperial Ecologist on Arrakis and the Judge of the Change, overseeing the handover of power on Arrakis from the Harkonnens to the Atreides. He is left to die in the desert by the Harkonnens.
Spice miner. Lynch is the miner aboard the spice harvester who converses with Duke Leto shortly before the harvester is destroyed by a worm.
The Beast Rabban. By placing Arrakis under Rabban's brutal control the Baron hopes to be able to portray Feyd as the people's saviour.
Two. Rabban attempts to conceal this from the Baron, fearing for his life otherwise.
Chani. Paul successfully transmutes this, a feat never before accomplished by a man.
50. This apparently includes all their reserves too but the Emperor is determined to destroy all life on Arrakis.
Thufir Hawat. Duncan Idaho is played by Richard Jordan, Gurney Halleck by Patrick Stewart and Stilgar by Everett McGill.
Sian Phillips. Alicia Witt played Paul's sister, Alia and Francesca Annis his mother, Jessica. Silvana Mangano played the Reverend Mother Ramallo and was the wife of the film's executive producer, Dino de Laurentiis and the mother of Raffaella de Laurentiis, the film's producer. Sian Phillips also played the poisoner, Livia, wife of Caesar Augustus, in the BBC's "I, Claudius".
The Emperor's. Having defeated the Emperor's army and won his throne, Paul kills Feyd, completing the destruction of House Harkonnen.

Virginia Madsen. Virginia Madsen, famous for her roles in 'The Rainmaker' and 'Sideways', appears as the very young Princess Irulan in 'Dune'. Though she did not have many lines within the film, she did get plenty of talking time as the narrator. This was only Madsen's third film!

Arrakis. Arrakis is actually the true name of the planet, it is only known colloquially as Dune (based on the fact that the entire planet is a desert). The name 'Arrakis' was derived by 'Dune' author Frank Herbert from the Arabic word for 'dancer'.
