Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information

    Grudge, The

What was the name of the man with whom Toshio's mother was infatuated, that drove her husband into a powerful rage? The Grudge

Peter. Bill Pullman played Peter in the movie, although he only was in two scenes in the whole movie. He was in the beginning scene where he threw himself over a five story high balcony, and he was in the scene where Karen learned what happened to Toshio's family. Peter found letters sent to him by Toshio's mother, and he went to see why she was sending him letters. He soon discovered that she had been obsessed with him, and that she had been murdered, as was the rest of the family.

The noise that accompanied the ghosts was what kind of noise? The Grudge

Death rattle. The death rattle sound was a little creepy, and I will forever associate it with this film. It is difficult to explain how it sounds, but it was often heard as a dying person took their last breaths. The audience at the showing that I went to, on opening night, enjoyed it so much that you couldn't tell when the audience was making the noise or when it was the movie.

What did Susan first find in her bed, that shouldn't have been there? The Grudge

A rabbit's foot. She had a rabbit's foot on her cell phone, but lost it in the stairwell in the building where she worked, when the curse was coming for her. However, the rabbit's foot wasn't the only thing hiding in the bed with her.

What color was the cat that was usually seen with the little boy ghost? The Grudge

Black. The father killed the wife, the cat, and Toshio in a violent rage. He drowned both Toshio and the cat.

What manifestation appeared in the shower with Karen? The Grudge

A hand. A ghostly hand was coming out of her head. An interesting fact about this scene is that Sarah Michelle Gellar discovered that she had an allergic reaction to Japanese water. Her skin started getting a nasty rash, so they wrapped garbage bags around her legs and the places not on camera for the scene.

Did executive producer Sam Raimi's brother appear in the film? The Grudge

Yes. Ted Raimi was in the movie playing Alex. Alex, I believe, was the person who sent Karen to the house to take care of the elderly woman. Yoko's ghost came to claim him.

Who had his/her bottom jaw ripped off by the ghost? The Grudge

Yoko. The jaw was found in the attic, but the body had disappeared. Yoko's ghost was seen later, dripping blood, with no bottom jaw and her tongue just hanging down. Yuck.

There were numerous manifestations of the "curse", but to make things easier, I'm going to call them ghosts, seeing how, in a way, that's what they are: manifestations of someone who has died. What was the name of the little boy ghost who was often seen holding a cat?The Grudge

Toshio. This ghost sometimes appeared as a living boy, but other times looked dead as could be. He even made cat sounds when the cat was or wasn't present with him. Karen found Toshio (and thought he was alive) and his cat taped inside of a wardrobe. There was also a journal featuring a picture of Bill Pullman's character, Peter, inside of the wardrobe.

Even though there were various storylines in the movie, the one that seems to catch the most attention is the storyline involving Karen. She was studying abroad in Tokyo when she had to take over a house call because a nurse didn't show up. Karen was played by which popular actress? The Grudge

Sarah Michelle Gellar . Sarah Michelle Gellar is known in the horror genre for roles such as Helen in "I Know What You Did Last Summer", Cici in "Scream 2" and Buffy in the popular show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". However Sarah isn't the only "Buffy" actor in the movie. Clea DuVall (Jen) played the invisible Marcie Ross in season 1 of "Buffy". Jason Behr played an old friend of Buffy's in season 2, where he wanted to trade Buffy to Spike in order to be made into a vampire, to escape dying due to his fatal disease in "Lie to Me".

How did Karen put an end to the curse? The Grudge

She didn't.. Obviously, the last scene in the movie shows us that the curse is still alive. If you haven't seen it, then allow me to spoil it by saying that although Karen did set fire to the house and survive, it was mentioned by a detective that they had managed to save the house. Soon after, Karen found Kayako breathing (so to speak) down her neck as she was about to identify Doug's body... and roll credits.

How much time elapsed between the birth of the curse and the death of its first confirmed victims? The Grudge

3 years. Upon discovering the bodies of Jennifer and Matthew, one of the detectives remarks that they were the first people to live in that house since a certain incident which occurred there three years prior, and we all know what that incident was, don't we? Player rj211 remarked that Nagakawa's partners, who worked the original murder/suicide case(and by then had disappeared) may be considered victims of the curse as well, but we really can't be entirely sure what happened to them.

Why did Takeo kill his family? The Grudge

He went crazy when he found his wife was in love with another man. Kayako was in love with Peter, who was a professor of hers in the recent past. She had a book, like a journal, in which she professed her love over and over, with little hearts, drawings, and such. Takeo found the book and snapped. He killed Kayako, drowned Toshio in the bathtub, and hung himself, and so began the curse.

What was strange about the pictures of Peter that Karen looks at?The Grudge

Kayako was in every picture.. In every picture, Kayako can be seen off in the background, usually looking at Peter. We eventually discover that she was deeply in love with him, and was probably stalking him.

When detective Nakagawa finds Matthew and Jennifer dead in the attic, what else does he find? The Grudge

a bloody lower jaw. The bloody jaw, of course, turns out to belong to Yoko, whom we later see ambling along in her former office at night covered in gore, with no lower jaw.

Who was the first person to die from the curse (Peter not included)? The Grudge

Jennifer. Even though the first person we see killed in the movie is Yoko, as the story goes on, we learn that Jennifer and (moments later) her husband, Matthew, were the first victims of the grudge, leaving his mother Emma all alone in the house, which is where Yoko the caretaker comes in. The whole story is told in non-linear time like this. Also, I don't consider Peter a victim of the curse because it could easily be argued that he just committed suicide after finding Kayako dead.

Takeo and Toshio's ghosts could have passed for regular people, while Kayako had a ghostly, freaky appearance. Who else shared Kayako's ghostly characteristics? The Grudge

Yoko. Yoko dies early in the movie, and is presumed dead and gone. Later, she is seen by Alex walking around bloody, broken, and with no lower jaw. The next thing we find out is that Alex is dead too. By movie's end, we know that Yoko's movements (all herky-jerky, snapping and crackling) were consistent with Kayako's, and thus that she was a ghost, and not just barely alive.

How many people die in this movie (that we know of)?The Grudge

      12. The first three people to die (chronologically speaking) were the family that now haunts the cursed house: little Toshio (1) and his mother Kayako (2) are killed by his father Takeo (3), who then kills himself. Peter (4), played by Bill Pullman, leaps to his death in the opening scene. Yoko (5) gets dragged up into the attic and killed. Emma (6) is killed off screen and found dead in her bed. Emma's son, Matthew (7), and his wife, Jennifer (8), are found dead in the attic shortly after moving into the house. Matthew's sister, Susan (9), is killed in her bed by Kayako. Alex (10) is killed off-screen, most likely by Yoko's ghost. Detective Nakagawa (11) gets drowned in the bathtub by Takeo's ghost. Finally, Karen's boyfriend, Doug (12), dies in the climactic scene when Kayako crawls down the stairs. We may also include Nagakawa's former partners, but the story never reveals exactly what happened to them.

What is Emma Williams's classic line? The Grudge

I just want her to leave me alone!. Kayako's hair is slipping through the cracks of the walls as Karen tends to Emma, when Emma goes rigid. Karen asks what's wrong, still not noticing the hair. Emma whispers these classic last words, "I just want her to leave me alone!"

What does Peter Kirk do, less than five minutes into the movie? The Grudge

Jump off his balcony. Five minutes into the movie, Peter's wife says, "Well, you're up early this morning!" Peter doesn't reply, but jumps from their balcony, smashing into the pavement a few stories below.

Who said the following quote: "Three years ago, three of my colleagues were investigating what happened in that house. Two died mysteriously. The third was never found"?The Grudge

Detective Nakagawa. Detective Nakagawa lost three of his friends and partners who were investigating the cursed house. They were killed by Toshio and Kayako. Detective Nakagawa says this to Karen in the middle of the movie, after she asks him about the house.

What did Kayako do to Yoko? The Grudge

Ripped off her bottom jaw. Police officers found Yoko's bottom jaw, bloodied and severed in the attic.

    Who is Yoko?The Grudge

Emma William's housekeeper/caregiver. Yoko is the housekeeper for an elderly woman named Emma Williams, who has trouble remembering things and barely speaks. Yoko works for the care center, and Emma is her patient.

Which character is portrayed by Jason Behr? The Grudge

Doug. Jason Behr plays Doug, Karen's boyfriend. A nice character, Doug always looked out for Karen throughout the movie, including going to the cursed house to look for her when she didn't show up at their apartment.

What is the tagline for this movie? The Grudge

It never forgives, it never forgets. The entire tagline to "The Grudge" is, "It never forgives. It never forgets. Once you see it, you can never forget. Once it sees you, you can never escape. The whole time I was in that house, I knew something was wrong. They say that when someone dies in a powerful rage, a curse is made. The curse is about to claim another victim." The tagline relates to the movie because it tells that once you enter this cursed house, the curse will claim you too. It's the whole plot of the movie in a few lines.

Who was this movie directed by?The Grudge

Takashi Shimizu. Both the American and Ju-On versions of "The Grudge" were directed and written by Takashi Shimizu.

    Where does Karen work?The Grudge

A social service agency. Karen works at the Social Service Center, and is assigned to care for Emma Williams after Yoko doesn't show up for work.

In the end, what happens to the three school girls from the beginning of the movie? The Grudge 2

They all fall victim to Kayako.. The two other girls get killed by Kayako; one dies in the hotel room and the other in the phone booth. Allison is the only one to leave Japan and come to America. Kayako eventually gets her at the end of the movie while she's out of her room. I guess Kayako made the trip to America.

Aubrey visits Kayako's mother and Kayako then kills the mother, why doesn't Aubrey help again? The Grudge 2

Aubrey doesn't really see what happens.. Kayako's mother tells Aubrey that there's no way to stop the evil going on with her daughter. Soon after, while they're talking, the mother's sight blurs and Kayako appears. I'm not sure how the mother dies. Kayako attacks her right in front of Aubrey but she just doesn't see what's going on. I was hoping for something with a little more realism here.

Aubrey finds out what Kayako's mother is doing to her daughter and decides to visit. How does she find out about it?The Grudge 2

Information from Eason's friend. Aubrey finds out about Kayako's mother after talking with Eason's friend, who knows about folklore. They first look through some old books but apparently Eason's friend knows about Kayako's story and Eason translates to Aubrey. I just mention the old man on the bus here because he was more amusing rather than scary.

When Eason is attacked by Kayako why doesn't Aubrey help? The Grudge 2

Aubrey is taking a nap.. Aubrey is at Eason's place and Eason offers Aubrey some tea. Aubrey appears exhausted and falls asleep. Eason goes to the developing room to check out some picture and is attacked by Kayako while Aubrey takes a nap. I was waiting for Aubrey to eventually wake up and save Eason but I guess they just needed to kill off Eason. This is one of the many scary attack scenes.

What happens after Jake follows the mystery woman downstairs and sees what's going on?The Grudge 2

Jake hides while the woman leaves and the scene ends.. Most horror flicks build up to the scare and keep you guessing with false alarms. It's quite surprising to see Kayako and Toshio appear in just about every scene. This is one of the few scenes in this movie that ends without some kind of ghostly end or climax. The woman hears something but doesn't see Jake. After she is done getting some newspaper, she turns once again but just leaves with Jake in hiding.
