Marines. Gunnery Sgt. Tom Highway (Clint Eastwood) is a lifer in the Marines who is nearing mandatory retirement age. He requests, and receives a transfer back to Camp Lejeune. There, he commands the Reconnaissance platoon under Maj. Powers (Everett McGill), a desk jockey who has never seen combat. The Gunny's reputation has preceded him and Maj. Powers doesn't like him before he even arrives.

Bus. Gunny is riding on the bus when he first meets Stitch Jones (Mario Van Peebles), a singer who sits beside him because it's the only empty seat. Gunny tells Stitch to have the driver wait while he goes to the restroom, but instead Stitch steals his bus ticket and leaves Gunny with the breakfast bill. Gunny ends up hitch-hiking and arrives at the base in a pickup truck.

Reading women's magazines. We see the Gunny reading magazines such as 'Bazaar', and 'Femme' several times. On the bus before Stitch comes aboard, he's reading one of them and puts it down when he sees a sailor looking at him oddly. He's also reading a magazine when he's parked outside of the Palace. Aggie (Marsha Mason) walks up to the truck and asks him if he's reading those magazines. He says they're Sgt. Maj. Choozoo's. Aggie replies that Choozoo can't even read.
Jones. Gunny gets into a fight after becoming drunk, and Jones is involved in an incident at a bar. After Jones gets put into the cell, he hears the Gunny's voice in the shadows saying, "You can beat me, you can..., just don't bore me". Aggie and Choozoo (Arlen Dean Snyder) come to get Gunny out, and Jones leaves along with them. They take Gunny to the Globe and Anchor, where he has a room. Choozoo explains to Jones how Gunny won his Congressional Medal of Honor, and Jones sees the Gunny in a new light. He also happens to see Mary (Eileen Heckart) folding the Gunny's t-shirts. She mentions that she lays out his things, and a smile appears on Stitch's face. The next morning, the platoon are all standing proudly wearing the same t-shirt as Gunny.
Gunny Highway. Recon and 1st platoon are on an exercise, and the first to make it to a certain place will win a 72-hour liberty. After a foot race, a tie is announced, which means a matchup between the platoons. The result is in dispute because Maj. Powers claims Jones cheated (he grabbed two guys in the crotch, when they fell, he was the last one in). Sgt. Maj. Choozoo determines there will be a matchup between the platoon sergeants. This should be Gunny and Sgt. Webster (Moses Gunn), but Maj. Powers points out that he's leading 1st platoon that day. Gunny wins the matchup, finally earning the respect of his men.
Grenada. Col. Meyers is having a party which Highway and Choozoo attend. Aggie is there too because she's still on the mailing list, she says. She is dancing with Gunny, and has just told him that Roy asked her to marry him, when an announcement is made that the battalion has been put on full alert. When Aggie turns back to Gunny, he has already left. It's 1983, and Recon platoon is sent to liberate Grenada from the communists.
Profile. Recon platoon gets pinned down and the men go into a building for cover. A tank fires on the building and Profile is killed in the blast. The radio which he was carrying is now inoperable, prompting Highway to send Jones to the roof to fix the telephone lines so they can call in an air strike.

Yes. As they are walking across the tarmac, Stitch tells Gunny this parade stuff must be old hat to him. Gunny replies that this is the first time. As they near the stands, the Gunny sees Aggie in the bleachers waving a small U.S. flag. She walks towards him, they look at each other and she sighs. They then walk off together as the credits roll.
"Heartbreak Ridge" was nominated for an Oscar for Best Sound. The movie also starred Bo Svenson, Vincent Irizarry, Tom Villard, Ramon Franco, Peter Koch, Mike Gomez, Rodney Hill and Richard Venture.
Clint Eastwood. Clint Eastwood plays the character Gunnery Sergeant Highway. The Gunny is a salty, hard core Marine whose strict discipline earns him a chance to go back to the Infantry ranks and train some undisciplined Marines.

Jail Cell. He is in a jail cell telling a young man war stories. He later gets into a brawl with a rather big man who insults him by calling him a Jarhead.
Urinating on a police car, and fighting in public. You hear the charges from the judge at his arraignment. The judge lets him go on account of his superb military record. After that you see that the police officer isn't too pleased about the charges being dropped just because Highway is a war hero.

Grenada. They are deployed to the island of Grenada. The movie was based on events which took place in 1983, when Cuban militants took over a Medical University in Grenada, taking college students hostage.

Lieutenant Ring. Lieutenant Ring (Boyd Gaines) is a platoon leader who has no combat experience. All of his military knowledge comes from war seminars and manuals. When he proudly tells Highway that he was the ROTC leader in his college, Highway responds by stating that he (Highway) has received his combat experience from real life battles such as Heartbreak Ridge, Korea. Corporal Jones and Pvt. Collins are members of Recon Platoon.

Sgt. Major Choozoo. Sgt. Major Choozoo (Arlen Dean Snyder) is a long-time friend of Highway. The two men have fought and survived the Korean and Vietnam Wars together, and they like to reminisce about the good old days. Choozoo tries to convince Major Powers of Highway's combat prowess, but Powers won't listen; the major believes that Highway is over the hill. Sgt. Jackson was Highway's and Choozoo's platoon leader in Korea. Colonel Meyers is the battalion's highest ranking officer whom we see in the film.
Major Powers. Major Powers (Everett McGill) believes that he has built an elite fighting unit with his First Platoon. He uses the men in Recon Platoon as mere pawns to be conquered. Highway, however, has other ideas. In order to teach Powers a lesson in tactics, Highway positions Recon in a hidden location; as a result, most of Powers' troops are "killed" in a mock combat drill. Powers is so furious that he threatens to kick Highway out of the Corps. Highway responds, "If we go into combat tomorrow, you'll plant half those men." Sgt. Webster (Moses Gunn) is First Platoon's resident sycophant; he practically worships Powers at every opportunity.

Swede Johanson. Swede Johanson (Peter Koch) is a gigantic young man with a major chip on his shoulder. The platoon members, fed up with Highway's strong discipline, goad the Swede into fighting Highway. Highway wins the confrontation, though, by knocking Swede to the floor. Swede expects Highway to send him to the brig, but Highway tells him to join the other members of the platoon. Highway says, "You're going to become a Marine. Fall out." Highway thus begins to gain the platoon members' respect because he is not a snitch. Aponte, Jones and Fragetti are members of Recon.

Aggie. Aggie (Marsha Mason) was married to Tom Highway, but she divorced him because she felt he was too dedicated to the Marine Corps; he left her alone while he volunteered for every war. She feels that she has earned the right to criticize the Marines because she has lived through the pain and suffering of combat. Aggie is dating another man in the beginning of the movie, but she still has some tender feelings for Highway. Little Mary is Stoney Jackson's widow, Lorraine is a cocktail waitress at the Palace and Dwayne is a singer in a contest.

Stitch Jones. Stitch Jones (Mario Van Peebles) is the "cool" member of Recon Platoon. He plays rock 'n rap music and writes funky lyrics. Jones clashes with Sgt. Highway throughout the movie, but eventually the two men gain respect for each other. Jones utters the "happening hostage" line just before he and the other Marines are getting set to rescue some medical students at St. George's University on Grenada.

Profile. Private Profile (Tom Villard) is one of the most likable members of Recon Platoon. He is not the most intelligent member of the platoon, but he is kind- hearted. After Recon Platoon rescues the students on Grenada, Profile tells his buddies about being kissed. Highway's retort is, "Was he good looking?" Profile rolls his eyes and responds, "It was a girl, Gunny." Unfortunately, Profile dies during a later combat scene

"devil dogs". Lt. Ring has learned much by observing Sgt. Highway's methods. At the end of the movie, he is no longer a timid nerd. Ring has become an assertive platoon leader who is effective in combat. He shouts, "All right, you devil dogs!" He then orders the platoon to charge up a hill in order to capture some enemy soldiers. Ring is later praised for his actions.
Colonel Meyers. Colonel Meyers (Richard Venture) is a veteran combat leader. He is totally unimpressed with Major Powers' lack of action during the battle, and he chews Powers out by pointing out the determination and bravery of Highway and Ring. Meyers praises Ring by shouting, "Good work, lieutenant!". With tongue firmly in cheek, he orders Highway and Choozoo to get out of his landing zone.
