No. Tommy Lee Jones was a contractor type for the army. He tells the lady agent that the reason he didn't join is because his brother was in the military, and was killed in action. His father said he wasn't going to lose another son.

"There is no reverence in what you do.". Aaron tells the hunters that there is reverence when you kill with your hands. The hunters are deer hunting with their rifles, and Aaron doesn't believe they're doing anything beneficial. Most of all, he feels that they are doing it in a cowardly way, as opposed to how he's used to killing, with his bare hands.
Oregon. Aaron Hallam is in Silver Falls when he kills the two deer hunters.

Army Ranger. Aaron Hallam is Sgt. 1st Class of the Army, Ranger division, who goes insane after 'rotating back to the world'. He finds himself in a state of dementia and insanity.

J.W.. After the man speaks up that the initials belong to him, Tommy Lee Jones wraps the snare around his neck and slams his head on the table. Tommy Lee Jones is obviously an animal lover, and he finds a wolf that gets caught in a hunter's snare, which causes the wolf to bleed from his leg and limp. He gets very mad, finds 'J.W.', and tells him and his buddies, "No more snares on wolves guys", while pointing his finger at them and looking at them angrily.
