Fighting Dragons. The Fighting Dragons are a formidable force at the tournament. Two members of the team make it to the semifinals along with Dre. Cheng wins his semifinal so Dre needs to defeat two Dragons in order to win. Master Li tells the first Dragon to injure Dre to knock him out of the tournament, which he reluctantly does. He is disqualified but Dre is hurt too badly to continue. Mr. Han works his magic with the cupping and Dre is able to continue to fight Cheng in the finals. Again Master Li orders Cheng to injure Dre instead of fighting fair. Although badly injured, Dre overcomes the odds and defeats Cheng. At the end of the movie all of the Fighting Dragons come over and bow to Mr. Han in respect for what he taught Dre.
Beijing. Dre and his mom move to Beijing. The Olympic village is pointed out to Dre because he once states that everything in China is old. His class also takes a field trip to the Forbidden City, the home of the Chinese Emperors. The movie was filmed on location in China.
Dre and Mei Ying meet at the Qixi Festival to see the shadow theater. According to Mr. Han, what Western holiday does the Qixi Festival most closely resemble? | "The Karate Kid" (2010)

Valentine's Day. Mr. Han states that the Qixi Festival is much like Valentine's Day. When Dre and Mei Ying meet at the shadow theater, she tells him the story of the lovers separated except for one day a year. Dre then tells her what it means to pinky swear and they both agree to be at each other's event - her audition and his tournament. In the end they kiss and their kiss is projected onto the shadow screen.

Chi. On the train Dre asks, "So, what are we learning today?"
Mr. Han replies, "Chi, internal energy, the essence of life. It moves inside of us, flows through our bodies, gives us power from within."
When they arrive they journey to the top of the mountain to drink from the Dragon Well. While there Dre sees a woman who is a kung fu practitioner (Michelle Yeoh of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" fame in an uncredited cameo) dancing with a cobra. Mr. Han explains it is the snake dancing with her because of her Chi, not the other way around.
Violin. Mei Ying plays the violin and is training for an audition to get into the Beijing Academy of Music. At one point Dre notes that the acronym for the school spells BAM, like a sound effect from a comic. The joke is lost on Mei, who does not understand.
Kung Fu. Although the original movie is about karate, the remake is about kung fu. In the original, Mr. Miyagi is an Okinawan immigrant. Okinawa is where karate originated. In the remake Mr. Han was taught kung fu by his father, which he then teaches Dre. Kung fu comes from China where the movie is set. Jackie Chan thought the movie should have been called "The Kung Fu Kid" because of this.
Maintenance man. Mr. Han is the maintenance man at the building where Dre and his mother move to in Beijing. He is distant at first but watches Dre and what is happening to him.
