Alex accepted the invitation and began dancing with Kate. During the song, a connection was made between the two and they started kissing each other, only to be found by Morgan (Kate's boyfriend) and Mona (Alex's girlfriend).

The book wasn't due out for a couple of years in Alex's time but Kate didn't think he should have to wait to find out how much he was loved.

Near to the end of the film, Kate and Morgan visited the company to have a meeting with Henry. After the meeting, Kate saw a drawing that Alex had done and she asked how to get in touch with him. This was when she was informed that Alex had died.

She asked Henry who did it and on learning that it was Alex she asked for his contact information. Henry then told her that his brother died in a car accident two years ago that very day, the same accident that Kate witnessed at the start of the film. We learnt that the person Kate had tried so hard to revive was Alex. It was his death that led her back to the lake house in the first place. Also we learnt that Alex was in fact going to see Kate when he got knocked down.
