Ashton Company, Inc.. Here he meets Mr. Ashton, who at first is not too nice, addressing Homer as "boy" and doubting his construction and contracting skills. Homer ignores the slights and Ashton's insulting tone, and agrees to work two days a week for the contractor. Homer also adopts a firmer resolve to build the chapel.
Lord, if you're still listening, how about a little meat on the table.. The four junior nuns act like little girls at Christmas when Homer gives them a bunch of lollipops following his first shopping trip. Mother Maria, however, appears quite ambivalent, even after Homer unpacks some "real food" for all to share.
You don't even know how to accept a gift from somebody without making them feel small.. Mother Maria won't say thank you here, instead insisting that any extra money should be spent on supplies for the chapel.
I failed because I put my faith in people instead of in God.. Mother Maria is more upset that her letter attempts for philanthropic donations have gone unheeded. But she shows her unhappiness by lashing out when Homer is at his most generous. At this point, however, Homer storms off and apparently abandons the project. It is at least three weeks before he returns, and he immediately begins to work again.
Juan, Mr. Ashton and townspeople. Juan and his helpers find it amusing that Homer is trying to build the chapel by himself. Homer finally accepts one brick to be handed to him by Juan, and within minutes a construction assembly line begins. Then Mr. Ashton appears with a load of bricks.
The workers, including Homer, hold a fiesta near the building.. Homer, Juan and some of the worker enjoy some spirits and traditional Mexican dancing to celebrate. They're not raucous, but the fiesta's being held so close to the chapel is not appropriate to Mother Maria.
Thank You.. There is an eerie stillness in the room when this happens, as Mother Maria realizes that Homer and the nuns are about to part ways. Lilia Skala earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her convincing portrayal of the feisty Mother Maria.
He writes his name in the cement at the base of the cross atop the roof.. A sequel to the film was made in 1978. Called "Christmas Lilies of the Field," the less successful but equally charming film starred Billy Dee Williams as Homer Smith.
