Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information

    Mamma Mia!

What was the major event that was being prepared for at the beginning of the movie?Mamma Mia!

a wedding. Never having been married herself, Donna had mixed emotions as she prepared for the wedding of her 20 year old daughter, Sophie. She had raised Sophie by herself, and while she wanted her to be happy, she felt that she was too young to be making such a commitment, and worried that she was doing it for the wrong reasons. She had her hands full with the regular wedding preparations, while welcoming her guests into the rather rustic hotel she ran, that was in need of serious repairs. Donna was played by Meryl Streep and Sophie was played by Amanda Seyfried.

Raised on a Greek island by her mother, Sophie never knew who her father was. How did she learn that there were three different men who might fit the role?Mamma Mia!

She read her mother's diary.. With her wedding approaching, Sophie was desperate to find out who her father was. She found her mother’s old diary which spoke of romantic liaisons with three different men the summer before Sophie was born. Sophie sent wedding invitations to all three men, hoping that she would know which one was her father the minute she saw them. Of course no mention was made of how she managed to locate them to send them invitations!

How did the three possible fathers get to the island?Mamma Mia!

on Bill's sailboat. Sam Carmichael and Harry Bright were seen arriving at the dock too late to catch the ferry. Sam interpreted the Greek writing on the sign that informed them that the next ferry wouldn’t be until Monday. Bill called out to them from his sailboat, offering them passage to the island where he was also going. They were all surprised to find that they had received invitations to the same wedding. Sam was played by Pierce Brosnan, Harry by Colin Firth and Bill was played by Stellan Skarsgard.

Sophie had not told her mother that she had invited these men, so when they arrived she quickly took them to their room. Where was this room located?Mamma Mia!

in the old goat house. Because she really didn’t want her mother to know that they were there, Sophie took them on a circuitous route that ended up with them entering their large, shared room in the old goat house, through trap doors from underneath. Donna referred to the building that they were in as her old goat house at several different points to her girlfriends. This was after she heard something going on, stuck her head up through the trap door and was shocked to see the three men. When she finally confronted them (after falling through a window in the roof above their room), she asked them to leave. They left her hotel but not the area, bunking down in Bill’s boat.

Resurrecting her old group, Donna and the Dynamos, Donna and her friends dressed up in disco garb and entertained the girls at the hen party the night before the wedding. What song did they sing?Mamma Mia!

Super Trouper. Written by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (the two Bs from ABBA). "Super Trouper" was released in 1980 on the album of the same name. The name for the song came from the big stadium spotlights, featured in the video along with circus performers and the group singing the song. The single reached Number One in Great Britain but only got to Number 45 in the States. Donna’s friend were played by Julie Waters and Christine Baranski.

Who gave Sophie away at her wedding?Mamma Mia!

Donna. During the girls’ party the night before (which was crashed by first the three dads and then the rest of the men) Sophie spoke first to Bill. Convinced from their conversation that he was her father, she asked him to give her away and he agreed. Later she spoke to both Harry and Sam, each convinced that he was her father. Both men offered to give her away so she was faced with having three different "fathers" giving her away. In order to avoid having to choose, she asked her mother to give her away. Donna was touched at being asked, and proud to do it.

Who turned out to be Sophie's father?Mamma Mia!

We never found out.. During the ceremony at the church, Donna mentioned the fact that Sophie’s father was in the room. All three of the men stood up to be identified as such. After much discussion about what happened that summer, they each acknowledged that while they could have testing to find out which of them was her real father, each was content to not know and to have a third of her.

Who ended up getting married?Mamma Mia!

Donna and Sam. Having had the issue of her parentage sort of cleared up, Sophie announced that although she loved Sky and wanted to spend her life with him, she wasn’t ready to get married and wanted to do some traveling. Sam surprised Donna by suggesting that they get married instead. Since he was the one whom Donna really loved (the other two being rebound relationships) she accepted, after he explained that he had broken off his engagement, twenty-one years before, and had come back for her, only to find that she had left with another man. Although they didn’t marry, Rosie did set her sights on Bill, and though he initially resisted, he eventually gave in and it looked like the two of them would be keeping company.

What unusual event happened at the celebration party, after the wedding?Mamma Mia!

The dolphin mosaic broke and a huge fountain erupted, soaking everyone.. Earlier in the movie it was mentioned that local legend claimed the hotel was built on Aphrodite’s fountain. When a tremor cause the dolphin mosaic in the patio to crack, Donna tried to caulk it shut but her caulking gun didn’t work. During the dance at the wedding party, the mosaic was blown apart by the force of the water erupting from underneath. The legend of it being Aphrodite’s fountain was again resurrected, as the people danced in the water. With Aphrodite being the goddess of love, it was presumably Donna’s reunion with her true love that caused the fountain to erupt.

Donna and the Dynamos entertained us in disco gear at the girls’ party. Did we ever see the three men dressed in disco costumes?Mamma Mia!

Yes. After the movie was over (and Sophie and Sky sailed away in the dark) we were again entertained by Donna and the Dynamos, in their disco gear, singing "Dancing Queen". At the end of the song Donna looked into the camera and asked if we wanted another one. They started singing "Waterloo" and were joined part way through by the three men, also singing and looking pretty silly in their colourful and ruffled disco outfits. Those of you who left the movie right after it ended would not know this.

What is Harry Bright's nickname?Mamma Mia!

Head Banger . After Donna has discovered that the dads are in her old goat house she tells them to get on Bill's boat and leave. Sophie finds them on the boat and swims to them. Once she is aboard she notices that Harry has taken her mother's guitar. Harry quickly points that he only borrowed the guitar, and that he was the one who gave it to her. He turns the guitar over and points out the initials DS, for Donna Sheridan, and HB for Head Banger. Sam and Bill who are standing nearby look at each other with a puzzled expression and mouth "Head Banger" together. This is when my favourite song, "Our Last Summer" begins.

    What is Rosie's profession?Mamma Mia!

Writer. As Tanya and Rosie are coming over on the boat, in the beginning of the movie, we learn that Rosie has just written a cookbook, which she happily autographs for a local villager. Donna is the owner of Villa Donna, Harry is a banker and it is Sam who has a career in architecture. Rosie is one of Donna's best friends, and backup singer for Donna and the Dynamos.

What country does this story take place in?Mamma Mia!

Greece. Throughout the movie Rosie keeps mentioning how everything is "very Greek". Rosie is played by Julie Walters, who is probably more known for her role as Mrs. Weasley in the "Harry Potter" series. Donna and Sam were together in Greece until he had to go back to his fiance in the States. Heartbroken, Donna decided to travel to Paris where she met Harry. From there he followed her back to Greece where she stayed and helped take care of Bill's Great-Aunt Sophia, whom she named her daughter after.

What are the names of Harry's dogs?Mamma Mia!

Lucy and Kipper. The dogs are seen in the beginning of the film, when Harry is preparing to leave for Greece. During the bride's party, Harry is having a drink at the bar and Sophie approaches Harry and asks if he has any children. Harry tells her that he only has two dogs, Lucy and Kipper. I thought it was sweet though when he adds "I would have loved to have had a daughter, because I would have spoiled her rotten". Harry Bright is played by Colin Firth, who gained recognition for his portrayal of Mark Darcy in "Bridget Jones Diary".

Who sings the song "SOS" with Donna?Mamma Mia!

Sam. This is the first song that Donna and Sam sing together. It's the scene where Sam confronts Donna about Sophie being too young to get married. He believes she has the potential to do so much more with her life and although Donna agrees, feels there isn't much she can do. Sam gets frustrated with Donna and this leads to them singing the song. I really liked how they split the scene up having Sam sing to Donna while she is working away on the wedding, and then Donna singing while Sam is decorating outside for the reception.

    Who does Donna marry?Mamma Mia!

Sam Carmichael. Sophie tells Sky that they should go off and see the world. The bride and groom to be confess their love and exit the little chapel leaving the guests, fathers and Donna standing around all confused. The preacher asks Donna if the wedding has been canceled and she tells him she isn't sure. Sam turns to Donna and says, "Why waste a perfectly good wedding". He informs a shocked Donna that she's going to need someone to boss around on the island. With her friends coaching her on, she sings "I Do, I Do, I Do" and they wed.

When is the song "Waterloo" heard?Mamma Mia!

The end credits. After the movie has finished and the credits begin to roll, Donna and the Dynamo's perform "Dancing Queen". The song ends and Donna ask the audience if they'd like to hear another and they begin to sing "Waterloo". After the first chorus Sam, Harry and Bill come out dressed up and wearing sashes across their chests with their names on it. Another chorus later Sophie and Sky join in and the group of eight continue to sing and dance along.

Why didn't Donna go home when she found out she was pregnant?Mamma Mia!

Her mother told her not to bother.. During the mother-daughter moment Donna tells Sophie that she didn't have a choice but to raise Sophie the way she did, because her mother told her not to come home. Of course she has no regrets about this decision and tells her daughter that having her was the best thing she ever did in her life.
