Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The
Tom Doniphon. In true John Wayne fashion, Tom Doniphon tried his best to defend the underdog as only he could - with the use of a gun.
James Stewart. James Stewart portrayed a young lawyer in the West, who had hopes of starting his own law practice. Unlike Wayne, he was no match for anyone with a gun.
north of the picket wire. He came from north of the picket wire, a term used to designate the men in the northern part of the territory who were cattle ranchers, and opposed to statehood.
a whip. As the leader of a group of robbers, he frequently cracked his whip for attention, as well as using it to beat his victims. The character of Liberty Valance was played by Lee Marvin
Pompey. Pompey, played by Woody Strode, was faithful to Tom right up to the very end, even risking his own life to save Tom from a fire.

cactus rose. Pompey planted it for her, and she remarked how pretty it was. At the end, Ranse asked who brought the cactus rose for Tom, and Hallie replied she had done that.
Link Appleyard. Link, the Town Marshal, was visibly scared of Liberty Valance, and was also very upset whenever Liberty did anything that might interfere with him having a meal.

Tom Doniphon's funeral. Their quiet, and extremely unusual, return brought reporters from "The Shinbone Star" to interview Ranse. This led to his telling of the story that the movie recounts.
Tom Doniphon. Tom, along with Pompey, hid in the shadows across the street from the showdown between Liberty and Ranse. Tom fired his gun, synchronizing it with the shot Ranse took. He finally told Ranse, to give him the chance to run for political office without bearing the guilt of being a killer.

Tom's old house. They both seem hesitant to bring up that particular location, although Hallie always loved the cactus flowers. Years before, Hallie had been Tom's girlfriend. He had brought her a cactus rose for her garden. His house would have been hers too, if Ranse had not come to Shinbone to live. Link suggests they could head out to the desert (which was where Tom lived), to see the flowers and Hallie agrees.
Pilgrim. Although no reason is given in the movie, it seems to Tom that Ranse is a pilgrim, an unprepared newcomer in a totally foreign land.

Ranse Stoddard. Link tells Ranse that Tom had not worn a gunbelt for many years, but the undertaker has Tom's boots ready at the end of the movie.

on the cuff. With Link ordering steak every time he sees Nora and Peter, even Hallie refers to it as "one steak on the cuff". At Peter's Place we see Nora marking it down as yet another X under the heading 'Marshel' on the chalkboard. (By the way, the only time we see this, the new larger X is number 49 - a lot of steaks!)
at the newspaper office. Dutton Peabody makes this offer, and then is a little hesitant after Tom mentions that there won't BE a newspaper when Liberty Valance gets through.
a room with a porch. Everyone in Shinbone knows Hallie is Tom's girl, but he is very sparing with his compliments and his time for her. He really is in love, and wants to marry her, but she falls for Ranse in the meantime.

Peter Ericson. Peter was in Ranse's class at the school he started in Shinbone. On election day he is dressed in his suit and tie and is visibly proud, holding up his certificate with the ribbon on it.
throws a mean punch. This comment comes from the one and only time Ranse punches Tom in the movie. Tom falls to the ground and sits up with that totally bewildered look and expression on his face that only he could deliver.

He killed an honest citizen. Dutton Peabody and Doc Willoughby challenge his statements and say that they cannot believe Starbuckle would refer to Valance as an honest citizen.
go back to Shinbone and open a law office. Hallie is very happy with this suggestion and tells him her roots are there and so is her heart.
Link Appleyard. No one else in town knows the Senator and his wife are coming. Apparently Link did not choose to tell anyone. Ranse says Link's wire caught them in St. Louis, but he does not mention why they were that far west already.
fired him. Ranse remarks that the only reason he will do the interview is because Dutton Peabody - founder, publisher, and editor-in-chief of the Star - had once fired him. The circumstances surrounding his statement are not shown in the movie.
Swedish brandy. Because of his injuries from the beating with Liberty Valance's whip, Nora says drinking this will make him feel better. Tom says it's not mannerly out west to let a man to drink alone, but Hallie takes the bottle away from him.
paint cans. Tom has Ranse put three cans on the fence posts, the center post last. Tom shoots two and then the one on the center post, splattering paint all over Ranse. He says that's the kind of trick Ranse will be up against if he faces Liberty Valance.
where he hangs his hat. Valance manages to have members of his gang nominate him as a delegate to the convention for Statehood. As always, this is done with force and threats to the townsmen.
two. Valance threatens the men of the town not to vote any way they'll regret when they're alone. Only the two gang members with him vote for Valance. They are the same two we see with him whenever he is in town.
Ranse Stoddard and Dutton Peabody. Tom Doniphon declines his nomination because of his personal plans to marry Hallie. So only three men are voted on - Ranse, Valance, and Dutton Peabody.
Tom. When Tom goes back to Peter's Place after the shooting, he sees Hallie with Ranse, and realizes he has lost her. He gets drunk and Pompey insists they return home. In anger, Tom enters his house and throws a lamp into the new room he has built. Pompey rescues him from the fire and releases all the horses.
three. Valance fires the first, and breaks a hanging pottery vase beside Ranse's head. The second hits Ranse in the right arm, knocking his gun to the ground. When he tries to pick it up with his left hand, Liberty fires the third at the ground beside it. His final shot is simultaneous with the one fired by Tom, the one that kills Valance.
two days and two nights. He tells them that their train will make 25 m.p.h. He also says they have wired ahead to Junction City where they will hold the express. Ranse replies he will write a letter to the officials of the railroad to thank them for their kindness and for going to all that trouble.
Pompey. Pompey, Tom's loyal friend right up to the end, is sitting there alone. Before they leave, Ranse tells him they'll be in touch, and slips him some cash for "po'k chop money".
Nora. Ranse holds his class in a spare room of the newspaper office. It opens successfully, with both adults and children attending. With the news of Valance's intended violence at the upcoming elections however, Ranse cancels the school's classes.
