Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. When Esther gets home from the dance, she finds Tutti awake and looking out her bedroom window. She is looking at the snow people she built in the yard. Esther is trying to tell her how wonderful their new life will be, and that as long as they have each other they will always be happy. Esther sings Tutti a song but it becomes very melencholy. Tutti becomes upset and runs outside and smashes her snow people. Papa sees this and feels horrible. He wakes everyone up and announces to his family that they will not move after all!
Grandpa. Grandpa can hear Esther crying through her bedroom wall. He offers to escort her, so she can go to the last dance they will attend in St. Louis. Every time I watch this movie I wonder why he didn't just offer to loan John his tux? That would have made Esther REALLY happy!

Papa's feelings are hurt because he thought he was just doing what was best for his family. The family ends up having a sing along and all is well, even though hearts are still heavy at the prospect of moving away.

Stuffing a dress and putting it on the trolley track. John was only trying to hide the girls, so they wouldn't get caught by the policeman. Poor John! After hearing Tutti's crazy story, Esther goes next door and beats John up! All turns out right though; John and Esther share their first kiss that night! Sweet ain't it?
At Lon's going away party. Esther tries in vain to catch John's attention across the lawn, but then decides meeting across the lawn would be too "ordinary". To help Esther out, Rose makes up her mind to have their brother, Alonzo or "Lon", invite him to his going away to college party.

Ketchup . Can you imagine having homemade catsup! Momma and Katie keep having a disagreement throughout the process about how sweet it should be. Everyone in the family has his or her opinion! They even put the catsup in little bottles. How charming!
outdoor electricity. All of the buildings at the fair light up and this scene is actually historically correct as outdoor electricity was introduced at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904. In the end of the movie, all of the Smiths are happy - Rose and Warren are together, Esther and John are engaged, Lucille and Lon are an item, and the entire family is staying in St. Louis.

No. Father sees how upset the family about the prospects of moving and decides his job is not more important than the happiness of his family. Just as he announces this decision to the family on Christmas Eve, Warren rushes in and asks Rose to marry him.

Backyard. Tootie destroys the snowmen the family had made earlier that day. She is convinced that they will never be able to build snowmen again in New York, especially if they live in an apartment. Esther comforts her, telling her there will be lots of good times in New York as long as they are together as a family.
he doesn't have his tuxedo. Esther is devastated to find out that John played basketball all afternoon and when he went to pick up his tuxedo, the shop was closed. Grandpa overhears Esther crying and offers to escort Esther to her last dance in St. Louis. She graciously accepts and tries to enjoy her evening in spite of her broken heart over not attending with John.

corset. Rose bets that no New York girl would dare leave the house without a corset on, including Lucille Ballard. Lon is in love with Lucille, who is attending the ball with Rose's beloved, Warren. The Smith sisters are determined to take revenge on Lucille for the heartache she has caused Rose and Lon. This is the first time Esther has had to wear a corset and although it does wonders for her figure, it is so tight, she isn't sure how she will get through the night without fainting. The girls look smashing in their dresses and plan to keep their dance cards full all night.
Cake and ice cream. Everyone is sitting around enjoying cake and ice cream when Father announces that they are moving to New York. After that, they all seem to lose their appetite and Esther and Rose leave the room crying. Tootie is more concerned about digging up her dolls which she buried in the backyard before they move to New York. Everyone is upset that they will miss the Fair.
hat and cane. Esther helps Tootie find a small hat that will fit her among the collection they have from their male party guests. Rose plays the piano while the two sing, "Under the Bamboo Tree". Tootie also sings an off-colored song to the guests which everyone finds adorable, except for her older sisters. She sings, "I was drunk last night, dear mother. I was drunk the night before. And if you'll forgive me, dear mother, I'll never get drunk anymore." A naughty song for 1904!

spank her. Tootie left her roller skate at the top of the stairs. When Father comes down to dinner, you hear him tumble all the way down. Tootie is already seated at the dinner table and he places the skate in front of her and says, "Tootie, remind me to spank you later."
Lon, Rose, Esther, Agnes, Tootie. Lon was in college, Rose and Esther were both interested in finding a suitable boy to marry, Agnes was a tomboy and Tootie was the youngest. Tootie loved playing with her dolls and giving them tragic, romantic illnesses. In the beginning of the movie, she tells Mr. Neely, the ice delivery man, that one of her dolls has four fatal diseases, to which he responds, "...and it only takes one."
