Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information

    Passion of the Christ, The

How much money did "The Passion" gross on its opening day?The Passion

$26.6 million. In its first five days, "The Passion" grossed even more than "The Lord of the Rings," earning a whopping $125.2 million to "Rings" $124.1.

How much of his own money did Mel Gibson spend on "The Passion"?The Passion

About $25 million. Gibson had trouble finding a studio to fund the production, because of its controversial nature and because of Hollywood's reticence to take on a project likely to excite deep religious feeling.

When Christ is apprehended in the garden of Gethsemane, who cuts off the ear of one of the Roman soldiers? The Passion

Peter. Christ, however, tells Peter to put down his sword, saying that "those who live by the sword will die by the sword."

In "The Passion," what do the religious leaders do while Christ is being scourged? The Passion

Turn away. The leaders watch silently at first, but ultimately turn away. This scene may suggest the way human leaders can set in motion evil events for their own purposes, and then leave others to do the "dirty work," or it may suggest that the evil done to Christ was so great, that not even those who set it into motion could bear to witness it.

Why is Gibson's Pilate reluctant to execute the Christ? The Passion

Both of these. Gibson suggests both reasons for Pilate's reluctance, and these reasons are likewise suggested in the Gospels. Gibson suggests that Pilate ultimately chooses to execute Jesus because he fears that if he does not, there will be a Jewish uprising, for which he will be held responsible, and that in turn will lead to his own execution.

Was Gibson's Satan played by a woman? The Passion

Yes. The actress Rosalinda Celentano plays the intentionally androgynous looking Satan, who appears cruelly beautiful.

On what religious holiday did "The Passion" officially open nationwide? The Passion

Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, which leads up to Good Friday and Easter. For many Christians, it is a day of prayer and fasting, and some denominations hold services during which congregants are marked on the forehead with an ashen cross.

Does Pilate turn over Jesus to Herod? The Passion

Yes. Yes, Pilate did not want to kill or judge Jesus. He then turns over matters to Herod to place judgment. Herod was so excited to see Jesus. Herod wanted only to see a miracle. When Jesus would not "perform" for him, he sent Jesus back to Pilate. This movie was extremely moving, in my opinion. I re-read the books, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in the Bible after watching the movie. The words were very close to what the Bible tells us. I know that this was only "a movie," but it was still a very graphic movie. I can only describe this movie as nothing short of disgusting and gruesome, in the events that Christ had to live through. Please bear in mind that I for one am very content that I saw the movie and would recommend that each and every Christian watch this movie with an open mind. I would never ever view this movie again. It was a one-time occasion and will not happen again. To the Christians that are taking this quiz: Christ died on the cross for our sins, so that we may enter the gates of Heaven, and I thank him each and every day for this major sacrifice. To the Atheist that are taking this quiz: Remember that Hollywood creates movies on all events. To the Jewish people: If you believe that the Messiah has not yet come to visit us, imagine what will happen in the days where he does come to see us. If Christ was tortured, as a Prophet, could the Messiah be tortured more? Again, I am only giving my views. Remember that we are each our own person and we all have different views. Life would be completely boring and bland if we all felt the same way on issues.

How many times did Peter deny that he knew Jesus, or that he was one of his disciples? The Passion

3 . Francesco played the role of Peter. Jesus mentioned at The Last Supper that Peter would deny him three times before the rooster crowed. Francesco De Vito, Hristo Shopov and James Caviezel all appear in the movie "I Am David".

What role did Rosalinda Celentano portray in the movie? The Passion

Satan. Satan was around quite often in this movie. From the very beginning with the snake, to the very end, where he lost the battle. He lost the battle since Jesus did die on the cross for our sins. There was one spot where Satan was carrying this baby. I didn't understand the meaning of this. I've heard conflicting stories that Jesus was the son of God, possibly that this was Satan's child and that he loved his child. He would never submit his son to torture.

Which part of Mel Gibson's body do we see in this film? The Passion

Hands. Mel Gibson has mentioned that Jesus had died on the cross for our sins, all of ours, including his. Through this, Mel wanted to be the one to put the nails in Jesus' palms, due to his sins (all of our sins). I have heard that Mel also has other parts of his body in the movie, feet and legs, but his face and hair were not in the movie.

Mary, Jesus' mother, was trying to get near him when he was carrying the cross. Was she able to talk to him?The Passion

yes. Maia Morgenstern played the role of Jesus' mother with perfection. The tears streaming down her cheeks when they were beating her son were life-like. This is one moment that I hope I never have to live to experience, seeing your child whipped and flogged.

The beautiful Monica Bellucci portrayed one of the major women in this movie. Who did she portray? The Passion

Mary Magdalene. Monica was born in Italy back in 1964. She played the role of Magdalene so beautifully and so touchingly. Monica is not new to the acting field. She plays the role of Persephone in "The Matrix Reloaded". I thought it was unique that Monica has also portrayed Dracula's bride in the 1992 movie "Dracula".

Was there a scene in the movie where Jesus washed the disciples' feet? The Passion

yes. The scene was during the flashback in the movie. Jesus washed the disciple's feet and held the Last Supper with the disciples also. "Washing of feet" brings to mind a certain type of humility.

Were some of the actors struck by lightning during the filming of this movie? The Passion

yes. James Caviezel admitted to being struck by lightning at least twice during the filming, once during the crucifixion scene. James looked up and said to God, "What, you didn't like that take?"

Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. Who portrayed the character of Judas? The Passion

Luca Lionello. Because of the betrayal of Judas Iscariot, Jesus was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane. Judas couldn't live with the fact that he betrayed Jesus and took his own life by hanging himself.

Who portrayed Jesus in this movie? The Passion

James Caviezel. James Caviezel was born in 1968 in Mount Vernon, Washington. James portrayed the character Warren Earp back in the 1994 movie, "Wyatt Earp". This was one of his earlier roles. James went on to portray the character of Jerry in the movie "Pay It Forward" with Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt. I personally think that James will most undoubtedly be remembered for his role as Jesus though.

What natural disaster occured after Jesus' death? The Passion

Earthquake. There was a terrible earthquake after Jesus' death which destroyed the temple.

Jesus was given his cross to carry through the streets and many times stumbled and fell. Mary, his mother, was among the crowd following him and was suddenly struck with the need to be near him. What were her words of comfort when she finally reached him? The Passion

"I'm here". This scene was, according to many, one of the most touching scenes in the film where Mary experienced a flashback of Jesus falling as an infant and her running to meet him to comfort him. When Jesus fell under the weight of the cross, Mary ran to meet him saying "I'm here" to which Jesus replied "See, mother, I make all things new". He then rose up to continue on.

After Jesus was brutally beaten, he was taken away, leaving great pools of blood on the ground. Who assisted Mary by giving her white cloths to clean up the blood? The Passion

Claudia. Claudia, Pilate's wife, was grieved to see Jesus, who was completely innocent, having to endure such horrible pain.

How many lashes were afflicted upon Jesus as punishment? Note: These were the lashes given using the stick whips, not the cat and nine tails whips. The stick whips were less severe and were used first. The Passion

      30. Jesus was beaten thirty times by the stick whips.

Jesus was falsely accused of numerous crimes, including the breaking of the Pharisees' Sabbath. To whom did the Pharisees make this accusation? The Passion

Pilate. Pilate found Jesus guilty of no crime but the Pharisees were so determined to have him put to death that they falsely accused him of many wrong doings.

Peter denied Jesus thrice, as predicted, in the temple. After realizing what he had done, he ran to Mary, Jesus' mother. What did he keep telling her as she tried to comfort him?The Passion

"I am unworthy!". Peter was so greatly ashamed of his denial, he ran away to weep bitterly.

How did Mary find out about Jesus' capture? The Passion

A disciple told her. One of the disciples, John, escaped from the garden to Mary's house crying "They've taken him!"

Judas betrayed Jesus and led the guards into the garden where he was praying. After identifying Jesus with a kiss, the guards prepared to seize him but Peter, one of the disciples with Jesus at the time, openly fought against them, severing one of the guards' ears with a sword. What was this guard's name, according to the movie? The Passion

Malchus. Jesus, seeing the man in pain, placed his hand over the wound causing the ear to reappear. Malchus was so amazed by this miracle, he could not move, even after Jesus' capture.

The viewers were shown a verse of scripture in relation to Jesus' crucifixion, at the beginning of the film. Where was this verse taken from? The Passion

Isaiah 53:5. Isaiah 53:5 states, in the New International Version, 'But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities.

What are the initials of the man who portrayed the character of Jesus Christ? The Passion

J.C.. Jim Caviezel played the role of Jesus Christ. It can be noted that he and Jesus both bear the same initials, J.C.

What scene was shown directly after we see the Roman soldiers leaving the place of skulls? Mel Gibson's "The Passion of The Christ"

Satan screaming in the desolation of Hell.. This scene shows Satan screaming in the desolation of Hell. This shows that Satan was completely angry because the sins of the world were forgiven. This proves to be a very troubling scene.

Who had the order to spear Jesus on the cross, to make sure he was dead?Mel Gibson's "The Passion of The Christ"

Cassius. Cassius was ordered to do this by Abenader. During the film, Cassius was shown to be less cruel than the other Roman soldiers. When he was ordered to spear Jesus, you were able to see the sadness and dismay on the face of Cassius. This scene shows that Jesus gave his sins for all mankind.

Who said this quote, "If you are the son of God, why don't you save yourself? Prove to us you are who you say you are."Mel Gibson's "The Passion of The Christ"

Gesmas. Gesmas, the convict to Jesus' right on the cross, said this quote. He was the one convict who was cruel and did not believe in Jesus or his preachings. Gesmas was also the convict who was wounded by a crow that landed on the cross. Christ then said to everybody, including Gesmas, that the other convict on the cross would be in paradise with Jesus. This shows the love and passion of Jesus Christ, and that everybody who believes in him, will go to heaven.

What flashback do we see when Jesus was being nailed to the cross, right after his left hand was nailed on?Mel Gibson's "The Passion of The Christ"

The Last Supper. At that time Jesus thought back to when he was preaching to the Apostles. He said, "You believe in me. You know that I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. And no one comes to the Father but by me."
