Margaret. Her sister runs a beauty shop.
Margaret's daughter. We only see Rosa Lee once or twice, but she is mentioned several times.
Makes brooms and chairs. Mr. Will, played by John Malkovich, is blind. This is my favorite movie of his.
Smoking. Mrs. Spalding gives Frank a spanking for it. Afterwards, she tells Mr. Will, "I won't do that again. Ever."
$100. She talks the man at the gin into bailing her cotton by reminding him that his gin has always ginned the first bale, but if he doesn't want to she would take it to Wheeler's Gin.
A bridge game at her house. Viola pulls her hand away when Margaret's husband tries to take the cards from her. Margaret sees this and knows. After the game, she asks him if she is right and he admits it. She slaps him (of course!).

A horse shoe. He put the horse shoe up on his door earlier in the movie. He was very superstitious.
One of my favorite lines in the movie comes from the scene where the entire Spalding family is eating Sunday dinner before Royce is killed. Possum says, "Right on my biscuit." What did Royce put on her biscuit? | "Places in The Heart" : 2

Mashed potatoes. He does this as Edna is going to answer the door.
Waxahachie. This movie was also based on people who actually lived in the town during the Depression era.

Marie Thornton. Edna then tells Margaret that she doesn't know how to support her family.
Amy Madigan. I loved Amy Madigan's performance and I think that she should have been nominated for an Oscar also.
$116.72. Mrs. Spalding seemed pleased about this until Mr. Denby told her that she owed a payment on the land.
First Farmer's Bank. He tells her that if the bank can help in any way, to let him know. But he doesn't seem to want anything but for her to sell her property.
Fighting in World War I. Mr. Denby uses this as conversation, because Mr. Will is not in the mood to talk. Who can blame him? Mr. Denby is pushing him out of his home.
Willa Langsford and her sister. Mr. Denby shoots down Edna's idea to open a shop at her house.
Ruby. Edna has come to ask for a job, but Margaret can barely take care of her own family since her husband does'nt seem to have a job of his own.
Run over by a cotton wagon. Moze then proceeds to show Frank how to counteract this bad luck. It adds a little humor to the movie.
Five Points Cotton. We see this clearly as Mrs. Spalding makes out her check, and it is also on the wall behind Mr. Simmons.
