Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
Singles Ward, The
11:30. The opening scene finds our handsome main character snoozing in bed well after the rest of the world has been up and functioning.
Nancy Reagan. Jonathon has adopted this motto and applies it to how he deals with the LDS church. He also subscribes to Woody Allen’s motto that an artist can dictate his own reality. Jonathon believes his profession makes him an artist.
1 year. Jonathon’s story was a fairy tale! He met the girl of her dreams, she converted to the LDS church, and then they were married. Until a year later when he came home to find her drinking and smoking in their apartment. Not all fairy tales end “happily ever after.”
Recall. It is difficult to be the only single adult in a family ward. And Jonathon was not only a single adult, but a divorced single adult. Quite the gossip starter.
Newsies. As an act of rebellion against the LDS church, Jonathon rents a bunch of rated R movies to show that he can think for himself. Whether he rented “Newsies” because he truly enjoyed it or to stave off the guilt, only he could say.
Stand-up comic. Much of Jonathon’s comic material comes from making fun of the LDS church and culture. This gets him in trouble later in the movie.
Says he must check with his parole officer. As a stand-up comic, Jonathon is quick on his feet. With every invitation to an activity, he has some witty comment to get out of it. Jonathon actually says, “I don’t think convicted felons are allowed to handle guns. But maybe paintball doesn't count; I could call my parole officer.”
Zack. Elden is rooming with someone who is not LDS. Zack is quite the character with his outrageous hair and numerous tattoos. He lives life in the extreme. Hence taking his car bungee-jumping.
Lionel Richie. At the end of the movie, we learn that Dallen became an expert on LDS urban legend. I’m sure we all know someone who likes to claim different celebrities are LDS. For the record, Gladys Knight IS a member of the LDS church.
Charly. Charly is another LDS cultural phenomenon. Everyone has either read, or knows what this book is about. And they finally made it into a movie. Please check out my two quizzes, “It’s all about ‘Charly’” and “It’s all about ‘Charly’ 2.”
133rd. I asked someone from Utah if there were really that many wards and they told me that it was definitely possible, especially in the B.Y.U. stakes.
Ward activities director. Cammie is in charge of coming up with the ideas for the activities in the ward. The opening scene of the movie is her asking Jonathon to perform his comedy at a talent night for the ward.
Feta cheese. Feta cheese in lasagna does not sound at all appealing. The only person that ends up eating any of it is Deverl, the guy that no one likes! I’m sure it didn’t help his appeal to the ladies at all!
The Fuzz. I can't imagine a cop show getting a whole lot of action in Utah. Though "Real World" definitely spiced things up a bit when they went to Utah. The Latter-Day Saint girl that went on that show was kicked out of Brigham Young University for it!
1240. You see the number several times through the movie. One is when Cammie papers his door with invitations to the formal dance.
Steve Young. If you don't know that Steve Young is Brigham Young's descendant, you have been living under a rock! And Steve Young would be most known for his years as quarterback on the San Francisco 49ers.
Dark Side of the Moon. Jonathon liked to treat the elderly people like they were just like everyone else. This led to him being offered the job of Director of Activities.
What actor is Dallen talking about right before he opens his mission call? “Did you know that when ____________ died, he and his wife had their papers in?" | Welcome to the 2nd "Single's Ward"

Walter Matthau . Dallen was always full of LDS Urban Legend. I am not sure if the Walter Matthau one is true. But the band Jimmy Eat World were raised LDS.
Boise. Boise, Idaho is the equivalent to Salt Lake City, Utah in terms of the high count of LDS people.
Popcorn Popping. I imagine these two actors had some pretty big headaches from breathing all that helium! This was one of the most entertaining scenes in the whole movie. This is a punked-up version of a popular primary song. Dallen and Hyrum are trying to figure out who asked Jonathon to the Preference dance and they end up breathing all the helium from the balloon invitation.
Mountain Dew. In general, Latter-Day Saints do not drink caffeinated beverages. So, this scene would be the LDS equivalent to the scene in "Grease" when the T-Birds are spiking the punch with alcohol.
God's Army. The original plan was to watch "Saturday's Warrior", but Stacey's roommate was using that movie to prepare a Sunday School lesson. In this scene Richard Dutcher (director of "God's Army") has a cameo.
Oreos. Mormon dating is almost like a sport! You cannot simply ask someone to attend an event with you. It has to be some creative way. I know a girl who asked a guy to a dance and he put his answer in a truck bed full of manure and she had to find it!
Battlestar Gallatica. The television series Battlestar Gallatica was rumored to have a lot of LDS doctrine in it. One example was the doctrine of eternal marriage. I never watched the show, so I can't get more specific than that. but perhaps if you watch it now, you will have a different perspective.
Throw gum at him. Jonathon fell asleep after he had gone for a drive to think about his life. The two kids are trying to decide how to see if he's alive, and end up throwing a piece of chewed gum on him.
VW bug. The license plate says "BNGBTL." Jonathon's car breaks down again, and right as the Beetle is about to go over the edge, he pops the brake and uses the car to track Cammie down.
Nipple rings. Everyone but Zack made it through the metal detector just fine. The airport security officer made Zack take off his shirt and show his nipple rings.
Australia. When Jonathon proposes to Cammie at the airport, she confesses that she loves him, but that "the Lord needs me in Australia".
Thurl Bailey. There were TONS of celebrity cameos in this movie, including: Wally Joyner, Danny Ainge, Jimmy Chunga, Steve Young, Shawn Bradley, Julie Stoffer, Lavell Edwards, and Ruth Hale.
Palm pilot. Elden married one of Cammie's roommates and they both used Palm Pilots to organize their lives. His wife even convinced him to wear a purple shirt! That was a huge change for ultra-conservative Elden.
Bruce Willis. It would be interesting to note that Halestorm Productions next movie was "The R.M.", a movie about a return missionary played by Kirby Heyborne (the same R.M. in this movie).
