Kevin's father coaxed him to attend the camp with a Jeep. Kathryn attends Space Camp because she wants to be the first female shuttle commander. Tish is in Space Camp because of an interest in communicating with extra-terrestrials. Max pretends that he is Luke Skywalker.

How realistic that the response to such a problem would be to send a poorly supplied shuttle into space with a crew of one adult and five children is a whole other question!
