He was disrupting the team. Coach Beaulieu represented the Cougars. The team spent more time picking on Bobby than playing. He fired Bobby when a player wasted the water by spraying it all over Bobby. In a flashback, another player spit in the cooler and Bobby went to attack him, but was stopped by the coach.

When Bobby brought him home to discuss the matter with his mother, she refused to even listen. Coach Klein showed Bobby a Roy Orbison tattoo he got, over his mother's objections. He told Bobby what their mothers don't know won't hurt them.
1994. The Mud Dogs was the team Bobby played for. He lost the first game he played by unwittingly giving the ball to a Cougar. He eventually let the team to victory.
Vicky. Vicky Valencourt was a tough, punky girl who liked Bobby, and vice versa. She gave Bobby his first kiss and would fight his battles for him. Bobby's mother disapproved of her at first but eventually took to her.

This caused everyone to turn against Bobby until Coach Klein confessed he did it so Bobby would be accepted to college so he could play. Bobby took a GED test and passed with a 97.

He stole his playbook. In a flashback, Coach Klein and Coach Beaulieu were assistants to a retiring coach. Coach Klein was expected to succeed him but Coach Beaulieu bullied him into giving him the plays he made for the team and got the job. Coach Klein had a nervous breakdown and never got over it.
