7. Only 7 were shown in the opening scene. Including Tony (the inactive member) and Anybodys (who finally becomes a 'buddy boy' late in the movie), there were 13 Jets in all.
New York. The film is set in the late 50s, early 60s and portrayed the time and troubles in New York, caused mainly by the problems of immigration.
Jets and Sharks. The gangs were based on the two rival families in Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' and the film has the same disastrous result.
Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim is rated one the finest lyricists of his generation. Anyone who can rhyme the word 'Krupke' with the line 'It's just my bringin' upke' has real talent.
Rita Moreno. In the London stage version Rita Moreno played Maria, the female lead. But her performance in the movie, in particular 'America' with her stunning dance sequence is what is best remembered by movie fans.
