Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
Wicker Man, The
A giant sacrificial altar in the shape of a wooden giant. We aren't told or shown the titular creation until the film's final moments, but it is indeed a massive wicker-style structure shaped like a man and filled with animals, plants and possibly the most easily-bamboozled police investigator in British history.
What aspect of their lives do the Summerisle natives hope to improve by their May Day sacrifice? | The Wicker Man
|
Harvest. Apparently the previous year's apple crop had performed below expectations, and drastic measures were in order.
What item of clothing does Rowan Morrison throw into a pool in the cave as she and the investigator are being 'pursued' by the locals on May Day? | The Wicker Man
|
Veil. And if he'd SEEN that, he'd...well...he'd probably have gotten caught, anyway.
Horrified by the paganistic burial practices he observes around Rowan Morrison's supposed grave, the deeply religious investigator does something to try to make the area more pious. What does he do? | The Wicker Man
|
Smashes a box into a crucifix shape.
The British investigator probing Rowan Morrison's death eventually finds himself taking an unwitting role in the May Day celebration. What 'role' is given him? | The Wicker Man
|
King For a Day. He becomes 'The Fool' and is thus made 'King For a Day' at the parade's conclusion.
How many generations of Summerisle lords have reigned over the island? | The Wicker Man
|
three. Lord Summerisle claims to be the second generation of lords, the tradition having been started by his father.
What does Lord Summerisle wear during the May Day parade? | The Wicker Man
|
Women's clothing. In accordance to ritual, Summerisle leads the procession as the 'man-woman.'
During the May Day parade, the performers cross their swords into a specific symbolic shape. What is it? | The Wicker Man
|
Hexagram Star. The blades cross to form a 'Hexagram,' or six-sided star. This was apparently a major pagan symbol (similar to the more well-known Pentagram) of the ancient world. It is the same structure as a Hebrew 'Star of David,' and it has been speculated that the Jews may have adopted and adapted the icon as their own during the Babylonian Captivity. A Pentacle is an inverted Pentagram, and is typically a Satanic symbol as opposed to a Pagan one.
What is the innkeeper's daughter wearing during the famous 'dance sequence'? | The Wicker Man
|
Nothing. And what a scene it is!
During a scene in the Summerisle pharmacy, we get a look at an example of neo-pagan medicine when a small child is told to hold a small animal in its mouth to help a sore throat. What is the animal? | The Wicker Man
|
When the film opens, what is Summerisle best known as a producer of? | The Wicker Man
|
Apples. At the start of the film, the most anyone on the British mainland seems to know of Summerisle is that the locals farmed some very nice apples.
En route to Lord Summerisle's estate, the British investigator catches a glimpse of some local girls leaping over a fire while nude. What ritual is he told they are performing? | The Wicker Man
|
A fertility rite. Exactly how leaping nude over an open flame is supposed to make one fertile is never quite 'fleshed out,' pardon the pun.
According to the schoolteacher, what is the only circumstance under which the students are taught anything of Christianity? | The Wicker Man
|
'As a comparitive religion'. The children of Summerisle are primarily schooled in the island's neo-pagan beliefs, but apparently learn the basics of Christianity for comparison. Ironically, I have to wonder if most Christian schools would extend the same courtesy to the kind of neo-Paganism practiced on Summerisle (that whole human-sacrifice thing would be kind of a stumbling block, of course).
Shortly after presenting the lovely innkeeper's daughter with a young man to 'enjoy' for the evening, Lord Summerisle compares her to a specific pagan deity. Which one? | The Wicker Man
|
Aphrodite. Though all four are Greek goddesses renowned for beauty, only Aphrodite is mentioned specifically in the scene.
What animal is buried in place of Rowan Morrison's body? | The Wicker Man
|
Lord Summerisle is one of the most memorable villians to be played by genre-veteran Christopher Lee. As of 2001, what was Lee's most-recent film appearance as a villian? | The Wicker Man
|
'The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring'. Lee was a memorable mad-scientist in 'Gremlins 2,' and he made a cameo as a judge in Tim Burton's 'Sleepy Hollow,' but his most recent turn as a baddie was his scene-stealing performance as Saruman the White in 'Fellowship of The Ring.' 'Attack of The Clones' won't be out until early 2002.
May. The mother of the missing Rowan was May Morrison, who never DID seem too concerned about her daughter's disappearance.
To what national identity did the island of Summerisle belong? | The Wicker Man

Scottish. Summerisle was Scottish, geographically speaking, which of course still put it under the jurisdiction of British law officials.

15 minutes. 15 minutes of footage was added for the DVD, including the beginning scene which establishes Sergeant Howie to the audience, and the scene with the song 'Gently Johnny'.
British Lion. British Lion distributed the movie, although they almost didn't after they were taken over in 1974, as the new boss didn't like the film. Still, someone must have managed to persuade him otherwise.

Which character said the line, "You'll never understand the nature of true sacrifice"? | The Wicker Man
|
May Morrison. I think Sgt Howie finally understood what May Morrison meant.
True sacrifice for her meant something entirely different to what he thought. (for those who haven't seen the movie, I won't reveal what true sacrifice means.)
