Willy Wonka .
Munich. Production notes for the film claimed that Munich was chosen as the filming site because of it's reputation as the 'Storybook Capital of Germany', the home of the Brothers Grimm. The Munich Gas Works was used as the front of the Wonka factory.
Fred Astaire. Also considered for the role was Joel Grey (Cabaret).
Augustus. Michael Bollner (Augustus) spoke no English and had to learn his lines phonetically. Currently, as an accountant in his native Germany, he now speaks English fluently.
Violet. Denise Nickerson (Violet) starred as Amy Jennings in the gothic soap from 1968-70 and also spent time with 'The Electric Company'. She has since left acting for a career in nursing.
Veruca. Julie Dawn Cole (Veruca) was the oldest of the children at age 13 during filming. She has been a prominent face and voice on British television, including the British soap 'Eastenders', for a number of years. Paris Theman (Mike) also acts occasionally (see below).
None. 'Willy Wonka' was Ostrum's only foray in the film world. He left acting to become a veterinarian.
They are mostly literary quotes. Wonka freely quotes from Shakespeare, Arthur Shaugnessy, Ogden Nash, Oscar Wilde and others. This was not in the original script that Dahl wrote. All of the numerous literary references were added by David Seltzer when he re-wrote the screenplay.

Mozart. From Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro'.
1971. June 30, 1971. Gene Wilder was present at the opening in New York City along with the Wonkamobile. Free ice cream and chocolate bars were given to all.
Nestle's. While Nestle's currently makes the new Wonka bars, Quaker Oats, a long-time backer of Saturday morning cartoons in the U.S., financed the filming of the movie back in 1970. It was their only venture into the film indusry.
Sammy Davis Jr.. The song was written by Newley and Briscusse, who were nominated along with Walter Scharf for an Oscar for Best Music, Scoring Adaptation and Original Song Score. Woods, playing the owner of the candy store, Bill, sang it in the movie.
Veruca. While Charlie also sang, it was in a duet with Grampa Joe ('I've Got A Golden Ticket'). Veruca sang the marvelous 'I Want It Now!', which, according to movie notes, took 38 takes, since there was so much choreographed interaction between her and the Oompa-Loompas.
A fear of racial terminology. The film's name was changed from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory because some executives feared that the name 'Charlie' had racist connotations to Asians, especially with the Vietnam War going on at the time. However, a documentary attached to the 30th Anniversary Edition of the film stated that the name change was to emphasize an upcoming sale of Wonka chocolate bars to coincide with the release of the film. There were problems, however, with the bars and the candy was never sold.
Charlie's father. Charlie's father was 'killed off' in the movie, but reappeared in the Tim Burton remake in 2005, played by Noah Tayler.
Augustus. He was the first person to find that ticket, is it no wonder!
Nut factory. He had all of his emplyoees searching for that golden ticket for his daughter, how fair is that!
Fell in the chocolate river.
Charlie. How cool was that!
TV Westerns. That was all he cared about.

Gene Wilder. He played in a lot of movies with Richard Pryor. He was also married to SNL cast member Gilda Radner who later died of cancer.
Grandma Josephine. This was mentioned on Charlie's birthday, regarding the gift his grandmothers gave him.
Gene Wilder. Gene has appeared in many other great films including 'See No Evil, Hear No Evil,' with his long-time friend Richard Pryor.
