 f. 40 Year Old Virgin, The
Joe and Sara. Joe (Lee Weaver) and Sara (Gloria Helena Jones) do not really play into the story much, but Andy's (Steve Carell) brief conversations with them show what a nice guy he is. However, the two of them do make fun of Andy behind his back!
| When Andy is confronted by his coworker, David, about his virginity, Andy tells him, "I have a very fulfilling life!". The scene then flashes back to show how Andy spends his free time. MTU. Andy is reading the lesser-known "MTU" (short for "Marvel Team-Up"), in which two different Marvel superheroes have an adventure every month. The team-up that Andy is reading is Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk. Some of the other activities that Andy is doing in the flashback is playing a tuba, detailing one of his action figures, and singing karaoke in his underwear. After this flashback, David (Paul Rudd) talks Andy into going clubbing with him and the other Smart Tech employees.
Leslie Mann. Andy leaves the club with Nicky and has a terrifying experience driving with her because she is extremely drunk. After she hits another car, she even throws up in his face! Leslie Mann and Judd Apatow, the movie's director, were married at the time the movie was made.
David Caruso . Cal (Seth Rogen) advises Andy about talking to women by telling him to just ask Beth (Elizabeth Banks) questions, and not talk about himself. He says that acting like David Caruso in the movie "Jade" would be perfect. Andy flirts with Beth perfectly due to this advice.
"Como se llamo!". The already classic chest-waxing scene is one of the funniest parts of the whole film, in my opinion! His coworker, Jay (Romany Malco), talks him into doing it, telling him that it will make him more desirable to women. Andy screams a variety of obscenities as he gets his chest hair removed. "Como se llamo" translates to "As I am called" in Spanish.
Cal: Sub-Zero, David: Baraka. While Andy is in his bathroom trying to work up the courage to call Trish (Catherine Keener), another great scene takes place as Cal and David play video games and continually call each other names. Their respective "Mortal Kombat" characters are apparent, because David uses Baraka's blades, and Cal uses Sub-Zero's freezing powers. Another interesting thing during the scene is that David is wearing a shirt with Brian Fantana's face on it. Fantana was Paul Rudd's character in the Judd Apatow-produced "Anchorman".
The Greatest American Hero. The credits define the show and its song. "The Greatest American Hero" was a show from the early 80s about a high school teacher who becomes a superhero completely by accident. Its unforgettable theme song, "Believe It or Not", plays as Andy and Trish have a variety of dates. The song is significant due to Andy's near-obsession with superheroes. Andy and Trish's relationship strengthens as the scenes progress. This is just one of the examples of how "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" is a much more developed and heartwarming piece of work than movies with related topics.
Kevin Hart. Kevin Hart is in the movie, but he plays a customer at Smart Tech. Andy takes Trish's daughter to the clinic because she wants to get information on sex and birth control. Andy is willing to take her since he knows less about sex than she does. His ignorance is apparent when he and Marla take part in a group discussion, and he asks ridiculous questions. When the other kids make fun of Marla because she admits to being a virgin, Andy tells everyone that he is a virgin too. The other fathers mock him for this, but it is because of this that we see another example of what a great guy Andy is. Another interesting fact is that the woman heading up the group discussion is played by Nancy Walls, who was Steve Carell's wife at the time.
Jack Palance. Cal tells Andy this after Andy informs him that Trish is a grandmother. Later in the movie, when Trish is angry because Andy is unwilling to sleep with her, she asks him if it's because she has a kid who has a kid. He replies, "No! I love that you're a hot grandma!". She does not appreciate this comment!
Smart Tech. Smart Tech is an electronics store, an equivalent to Best Buy, Circuit City, or more of an upscale Radio Shack. The manager insists on playing a Michael McDonald DVD on the big screen TV displays. Andy starts the movie by working as the stock room supervisor, and moves up to floor manager by the end of the movie.
Dawn of the Dead. Paula says the employees aren't allowed to watch that movie in the store, but Jay says that she is gone, and the store is slow, so he figures he'll watch whatever he wants to.
Tijuana. Cal shows up a few minutes late to work, which Andy simply shrugs off without a problem. Cal then tells Andy the story of his weekend, saying that he went to Tijuana, Mexico, and went to what he thought would be an interesting show. He tells Andy that it was nowhere near as cool as he thought it would be. Andy then lets Cal know that his weekend consisted of making an egg salad sandwich that he didn't want to eat after he had finished making it.

Man-o-lantern. Andy one day asks Jay if women would find him attractive, and Jay says that they would if he got his "teen-wolf" look (EXTREMELY hairy chest) waxed off. Andy has no clue what that's going to be like, so he agrees to it, only to have to go through the most excruciating pain of his life. He stops midway through, while his chest, which was waxed in completely random places, really does look like a face. This is when Dave tells Andy that he looks like a man-o-lantern.

Everybody Loves Raymond. Dave doesn't think that should be in there, but he says that it's just a good show. What makes the gag funny is that when all is said and done, Andy enjoys watching "Everybody Loves Raymond" more than any of the other videos in the box.

Three. The third time's the charm. He first calls her right before he goes to work one day, and chokes when she answers the phone. The second time, he's about ready to give it a shot, when he clams up and comes across as a telemarketer named James. The third time he finally braves out the call, only to have to inform Trish that he rides a "bikcycle" (bicycle).
Euphonium. After being chased all around town by Dave after he runs away from work when his secret is out that he's a virgin, Andy tells Dave that he lives a fulfilling life without women. We then see a montage of different things that Andy enjoys doing in the confines of his apartment, one of which is parading around his place playing the euphonium.

Orange. You can clearly see the can during some shots of the poker scene, whereas everyone else is drinking beer. This lets us know that Andy is so simple that he doesn't even drink socially. He would rather drink soda during an outing with the guys. Too bad that throughout the course of the movie, we see him in a couple bars, drinking it up.

Gandhi. During this scene, Paula asks Cal if he has any marijuana that he could spare, that could have her baked for a week. Cal inquires where she's going, and she tells him that she's going to stay at her place, and probably re-watch "Gandhi." Cal says that watching "Gandhi" while baked is good, but he feels bad because he starts to get hungry, while poor Gandhi is starving.

Piedmont. Her last name can be seen briefly on the business card she gives Andy. When he asks her why she is giving him her home number, she chuckles awkwardly in the way that she does numerous times throughout the film. Iron Man. Andy is talking about one of his action figures. Trish has attempted to seduce him, and thus knocked some of his action figures off the bed. He is more concerned about the quality of his collection than about making love, and that causes Trish to demand why he cares more about the toys than he does about her.
Eruption. Andy believes the bus is taunting him, because he sees the Eruption ad once, walks a little faster down the sidewalk, and when he looks at it again, he imagines the ad covering the entire side of the bus! Another Eruption ad that can be seen is the billboard that Andy crashes through after running into Trish's car with his bike.
Abdul. Besides Andy, Cal, David, Jay, and Paula, the Smart Tech employees we see are Haziz (Shelley Malil), Mooj (Gerry Bednob), and Bernadette (Marika Dominczyk). Haziz is not seen often, and just seems to pop up at random times to make fun of his employees (particularly Andy, Jay, and David). Mooj is an edgy older man who constantly argues with Jay, but actually likes Andy fairly well. Bernadette is hired by Cal in order to get David out of his depression. The two of them hit it off, and are dating by the end of the movie.

He claims that he went to Magic Camp (he doesn't say if he did it as a kid or as an adult), he is a skilled ventriloquist, and he has achieved the distinction of being a seventh-degree Imperial Yo-Yo Master.

Seth Rogen. Seth Rogen, who plays Cal, and is one of the film's co-producers, tells Stormy that as a co-producer he is basically the head of the movie. She flirts with him, touching his tattoos, and shows him the one she has. This tattoo has an odd resemblence to Seth, which he comments about.
Kim. The women that Andy meets whose names are mentioned are Amy (Mindy Kaling), Nicky (Leslie Mann), and Gina (Mo Collins). Amy is David's ex-girlfriend who expresses an interest in dating Andy until she finds out he is David's friend. Nicky is the woman with whom Andy has a terrifying drunk driving experience. He tries to avoid talking to her at Date-a-Palooza, even though she is sober. Gina is a professed former lesbian who likes Andy because of his feminine features, which makes him extremely uncomfortable. The other women are not credited by name, but their names can be seen on their nametags: Andrea (who believes Andy is retarded), Cheryl (who spends the entire time on her cell phone making fun of everybody else there), Michelle (who tells Andy in the first few seconds that he is not her type and refuses to talk to him), Selena (who is a virgin, but believes Andy is lying when he says he is one too), and Carol (who has a severe wardrobe malfunction). David is shown having an even worse time than Andy, getting drunk after talking with Amy. Cal is berated by Andrea, who is almost sadistic in her insults, but he manages to appeal to Michelle by telling her that he likes to photograph tiny dogs in teacups. Jay has the best luck of the bunch; he makes out with Selena and Gina, convinces Cheryl to later hook up with him, and also tells another woman (whose nametag can't be seen) that he's a doctor.

Whenever they clean my room, I can't find anything/Where are you going with such haste?/To a football game. The song doesn't make much sense translated into English, but when in Spanish, it sounds simultaneously romantic and creepy. Or, at least it sounds creepy when sung by Paula (Jane Lynch).
