Dire Straits
3. "Dire Straits" (1978), "Money For Nothing" (1988), and "Live At The BBC" (1995).
Hammersmith Odeon, London. The show was recorded live at Hammersmith Odeon, London, July 22-23 1983.
Golden Heart. "Golden Heart" was released in 1996. A further two solo albums followed: "Sailing To Philadelphia" in 1999 and more recently "The Ragpicker's Dream" in 2002.
Notting Hillbillies. They first played together in Leeds as Notting Hillbillies in 1986, but did not release an album until 1990's "Missing...but presumed having a good time".
Infidels. As well as producing the album, he also wrote the song "Jokerman" for it. He also played on the album "Slow Train Coming", but did not produce it.
Private Dancer. It was a song left over from material written for the album "Love Over Gold". It was a hit for Tina Turner in 1985.

Private Investigations. "Private Investigations" reached number 2 in September of 1982.
Communique. Dire Straits' debut album was released in 1978, followed by "Communique" in 1979. "Making Movies" in 1980, "Love Over Gold" in 1982, "Brothers In Arms" in 1985, "On Every Street" in 1991.
Brewer's Droop. His main income at this time, though, was from teaching.
Teacher. He studied English literature at Leeds University, and was a junior reporter for a local paper, the "Yorkshire Evening Post", and then for a short while an Essex newspaper.
Glasgow. His family moved to Newcastle when he was very young and he was brought up there.

'Down To The Waterline'. Knopfler often referred to North Eastern landmarks, like the 'Spanish City' fairground in 'Tunnel Of Love.'
Because Mark insisted he practise more. David still did session music for Dire Straits after leaving, and the band did the same for David on his solo career.
'Golden Heart'. Mark made a variety of albums and film scores after Dire Straits.
'Sultans Of Swing'. The song was semi-biographical, referring to their days doing the London pub scene.
Muff Winwood. Winwood allowed the band lots of control over the record in an attempt not to change their unique style.
'Communique'. Jerry Wexler, Warner Bros. insisted that the band record the second album in a much more posh recording studio than the first, but he later said that he'd underestimated the potential of 'Dire Straits' saying: "It would have been a hit even if it had only been available in grocery stores"

Glasgow and Newcastle. Mark was born in Glasgow but moved down to Newcastle, in the North East of England, where he was raised with brother and fellow band member David. He also spent time in Leeds before moving to London to form the band.
'Dire Straits'. The first album was fairly unsuccessful in the UK until the single 'Sultans Of Swing' took off in Holland and across Europe.
guitar. Mark Knopfler is famous for his guitar skills. He plays mostly electric.
David Knopfler. David Knopfler, Mark Knopfler's brother and one of the band's guitarists, left the band because he didn't want to practice enough. Mark was the lead and held the band together; Pick Withers was the drummer; John Illsley was the bassist.
Communique. "Communique" didn't make a big splash, but this fan thinks it's an awesome album. There is no Dire Straits II album; both "Brothers in Arms" and "Making Movies" are later albums by Dire Straits. Some great songs from "Communique" are "Where Do You Think You're Going?" and "Portobello Belle".
Mark Knopfler. Mark Knopfler was born in Scotland. He now has a solo career. He is a great guitarist and songwriter.
