Franklin, Aretha
Tennessee. Aretha Franklin was born March 25, 1942 in Memphis, TN. Her father moved the family to Detroit where he was the pastor of the New Bethel Baptist Church. Aretha quickly discovered her love for singing in the choir, where she certainly stood out due to her vocal ability.
The Gospel Sound of Aretha Franklin. Aretha released this album on the Checker label when she was discovered singing in the choir. Although Checker did not sign her to a contract, the record still remains as Aretha's first professional recording.

Respect. It's certainly befitting that Ms. Franklin's first Grammy would be for her signature song. "Respect" won the 1967 Grammy for Best Female R&B Solo Vocal and Best R&B Recording.
Respect. All these classics were released in 1967, but only "Respect" achieved number one status, on both the pop and the black US charts.
Jimmy Carter. Aretha performed a very moving rendition of "God Bless America" at Jimmy Carter's Presidential Inaugural Gala on January 19, 1977. The thing that made this performance so special was that she performed a cappella (without musical accompaniment).

Ray Charles. Many people wanted to perform with Ray Charles on the "Duets" album, but he was limited to the number of songs he could record. In addition to Ms. Franklin, Charles performed with Quincy Jones, Chaka Khan, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Lou Rawls and Gladys Knight among others. Sadly, Ray Charles passed away June 10, 2004 after a long battle with liver disease.

The Big Chill. Ms. Franklin has contributed songs to a variety of films including: "Forrest Gump", "White Men Can't Jump", "Operation Dumbo Drop" and "Ali" among many others.

Nancy Kerrigan. Nancy Kerrigan was the host on the show that night, so obviously a spoof on the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding incident had to be made. Aretha sang the songs "Willing to Forgive" and "Chain of Fools" On Aretha's first appearance, she sang the songs "Can't Turn You Loose" and "United Together".
Bridge Over Troubled Water. Ms. Franklin sang this song on the "Live at Filmore West" album. She also covered The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby", Stephen Stills' "Love the One You're With" and Bread's "Make it With You" on this album. She also had Ray Charles come onstage and sing "Spirit in the Dark" with her.

(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman. This song was written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin and was released by Franklin in 1967. It reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and twenty eight years later Mary J Blige did a cover version on the “New York Undercover” soundtrack.
Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Bacharach and David wrote the song for Dionne Warwick in 1967. Warwick’s original reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and one year later Aretha released her version reaching number ten. King and Goffin’s first songwriting hit was “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” by The Shirelles. Greenwich and Barry wrote such popular songs as “Be My Baby” (The Ronettes) and “And Then He Kissed Me” (The Crystals). Some of the well-known songs Leiber and Stoller wrote were, “Jailhouse Rock” (Elvis Presley) and “Poison Ivy” (The Coasters).

Think. Ted White and Aretha co-wrote this song for her “Aretha Now” album. The album also featured her younger sister Carolyn Franklin on backing vocals. In 1979, Aretha’s contract ran out with Atlantic records, but she hit the limelight again in 1980 when “Think” and her acting role of Mrs Matt Murphy featured in the movie “The Blues Brothers” and was then signed to Arista Records.
Memphis, Tennessee. Aretha was born in 1942 to parents, Rev C L Franklin & Barbara Franklin (nee Siggers) and was one of five children. Unfortunately, Aretha’s parents separated when she was six and her mother died of a heart attack when she was only ten. Her first record deal was with Checker Records and she released the album, “Songs of Faith” in 1956 at age fourteen.

Annie Lenox, George Michael, Elton John and Frank Sinatra. Aretha recorded her duet “Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves” with Annie Lennox in 1985 which reached number eighteen on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number nine in the UK Singles Chart. In 1987, she recorded “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)” with George Michael which achieved number one status in US (Billboard Hot 100), UK (UK SIngles Chart) and Australia (The ARIA Charts). “Through The Storm” with Elton John reached number three in the US Billboard chart in 1989 and in 1993 Aretha recorded “What Now My Love” with Frank Sinatra.
First woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Crowned Queen of Soul, Awarded the ‘National Medal of Arts’, Awarded the ‘Presidential Medal of Freedom’). Aretha was the first woman to be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame and the second for the UK Music Hall of Fame (Madonna was the first!). Her title of “Queen of Soul” is more of status rather than an actual award and she received the ‘National Medal of Arts’ in 1999 and the ‘Presidential Medal of Freedom’ in 2005.
