Hymns and Sacred Music Trivia Questions

1. What old-time hymn are these words from? "Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity!"

From Quiz
What Old-Time Hymn Are These Words From? -- #3

Answer: Holy, Holy, Holy

'Holy, Holy, Holy!' was written by Reginald Heber in 1826 in India while serving as the Bishop of Calcutta. Heber, who is credited with writing more than fifty hymns, died shortly after he wrote 'Holy, Holy, Holy'. He was born into a wealthy family in Malpas, Cheshire, England in 1783. Here are the words to 'Holy, Holy, Holy': "Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, who wert and art and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, perfect in power, in love, and purity. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea; holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity!"

2. "Praise, my, soul, the __________" What aspect of God is being praised in this hymn?

From Quiz Traditional Hymns from the Oremus

Answer: King of Heaven

"Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; To his feet thy tribute bring; Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, Evermore his praises sing: Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise the everlasting King." With words by Henry Francis Lyte and music from John Goss' "Laudata anima," this nineteenth-century hymn is especially popular as a processional, or opening, hymn.

3. 'Battle Hymn of the Republic' was sung at the 1994 funeral of U.S. President Richard M. Nixon. What was Nixon's middle name?

From Quiz Hymns Sung at Celebrity Funerals -- #3

Answer: Milhous

Richard Nixon's middle name was 'Milhous'. He was born January 9, 1913, in Yorba Linda, California, and died April 22, 1994, in New York City. Nixon served as president of the United States from 1969 to 1974. He was the first American president to resign from office. Nixon is remembered for a number of quotes, but this one is my favorite: "Always remember others may hate you but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them. And then you destroy yourself." In addition to being sung at the funeral of Nixon, 'Battle Hymn of the Republic', was sung at the funerals of U.S. President Ronald Reagan, U.S. Presidential candidate Robert Kennedy and British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill. 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic' is often used as an American patriotic song, although it has a profound Christian message. It has been played many times at the national conventions of both the Republican Party and Democratic Party. It has been often sung at Presidential inaugurations. Outside the United States, the hymn is often called 'Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory'. Julia W. Howe wrote 'Battle Hymn of the Republic' in 1861, during the U.S. Civil War. The Website Nethymnal.org reports Howe visited a Union Army camp on the Potomac River near Washington, D.C., when she heard the soldiers singing the song 'John Brown's Body', and was taken with the strong marching beat. She wrote the words the next day. She is quoted by Nethymnal.org as saying: "I awoke in the grey of the morning, and as I lay waiting for dawn, the long lines of the desired poem began to entwine themselves in my mind, and I said to myself, 'I must get up and write these verses, lest I fall asleep and forget them!' So I sprang out of bed and in the dimness found an old stump of a pen, which I remembered using the day before. I scrawled the verses almost without looking at the paper." Here are the words to 'Battle Hymn of the Republic': "Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword; His truth is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on. I have seen Him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps; His day is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His day is marching on. I have read a fiery Gospel writ in burnished rows of steel; "As ye deal with My contemners, so with you My grace shall deal"; Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel, Since God is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Since God is marching on. He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat; Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet; Our God is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on. In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me: As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free; [originally ...let us die to make men free] While God is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! While God is marching on. He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave, He is wisdom to the mighty, He is honor to the brave; So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of wrong His slave, Our God is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on."

From Quiz Hymns Sung at Celebrity Funerals

Answer: Dwight Eisenhower

Dwight Eisenhower, born in Denison, Texas, in 1890 is the correct answer. Eisenhower was the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe in the Second Word War, before becoming president of the United States. He served as president from 1953 to 1961, replacing Harry Truman. Eisenhower was succeeded by John Kennedy. He died of congestive heart failure on March 28, 1969, at the age of 78. The Website Nethymnal.org reports the hymn 'A Mighty Fortress Is Our God' was sung at his funeral. Martin Luther wrote the words to the hymn in 1529. More than three hundred years later, 'A Mighty Fortress Is Our God' was translated from German to English by Frederic H. Hedge in 1853. "This song has been called 'the greatest hymn of the greatest man of the greatest period of German history' and the 'Battle Hymn of the Reformation'", Nethymnal.org states. Here are the words to 'A Mighty Fortress Is Our God': "A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing: For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal. Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing; Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God's own choosing: Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same, And He must win the battle. And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us: The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure, One little word shall fell him. That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth: Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; The body they may kill: God's truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever." And here are the words to an alternate translation: "A mighty fortress is our God, a trusty shield and weapon; He helps us free from every need that hath us now overtaken. The old evil foe now means deadly woe; deep guile and great might Are his dread arms in fight; on Earth is not his equal. With might of ours can naught be done, soon were our loss effected; But for us fights the Valiant One, whom God Himself elected. Ask ye, who is this? Jesus Christ it is. Of Sabbath Lord, and there's none other God; He holds the field forever. Though devils all the world should fill, all eager to devour us. We tremble not, we fear no ill, they shall not overpower us. This world's prince may still scowl fierce as he will, He can harm us none, he's judged; the deed is done; One little word can fell him. The Word they still shall let remain nor any thanks have for it; He's by our side upon the plain with His good gifts and Spirit. And take they our life, goods, fame, child and wife, Let these all be gone, they yet have nothing won; The Kingdom ours remaineth."

6. Without question, the most famous old-time hymn with 'grace' in the title is 'Amazing Grace', written by John Newton. What occupation did Newton work at before he became an ordained minister and wrote 'Amazing Grace'?

From Quiz Old-Time Hymns With 'Grace' in the Title

Answer: slave trader

John Newton, a former slave trader, was born in 1725 in Wapping, the United Kingdom, and died in London in 1807. Various Websites report Newton was crude and brash and extremely disliked by all, including his crew, when he served as captain of slave ships. Time Magazine, in its June 28, 2015 edition, describes Newton in the early part of his life, as "an outspoken atheist, libertine, and slave trader." Newton, however, would undergo a miraculous transformation in his life when he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and Lord, various Websites report. In other words, Newton experienced God's 'amazing grace'. (The final verse for Amazing Grace was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin.) Here are the words to the old-time hymn 'Amazing Grace': "Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed! Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; 'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. The Lord has promised good to me, His Word my hope secures; He will my Shield and Portion be, As long as life endures. Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease, I shall possess, within the veil, A life of joy and peace. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine; But God, who called me here below, Will be forever mine. When we've been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We've no less days to sing God's praise Than when we'd first begun."

7. Three communities -- Albion, Michigan, Pokagon, Michigan and Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin -- all claim to be the home of 'The Old Rugged Cross'. According to Wikipedia, which community is correct in using the moniker?

From Quiz Old-Time Hymns With 'Cross' in the Title

Answer: Technically, all three are correct

It's a long story, but all three communities are technically correct when they claim to be the home of the ever popular hymn 'The Old Rugged Cross'. George Bannard wrote the words and composed the music for the hymn in 1913 and the three communities figure in the hymn's birth. Wikipedia offers this explanation: "Bennard wrote the first verse of 'The Old Rugged Cross' in Albion, Michigan, in the fall of 1912 as a response to ridicule that he had received at a revival meeting. Bennard traveled with Ed E. Mieras from Chicago to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin where they held evangelistic meetings at the Friends Church from December 29, 1912 to January 12, 1913. During the meetings Rev. George Bennard finished 'The Old Rugged Cross' and on the last night of the meeting Bennard and Mieras performed it as a duet before a full house with Pearl Torstensen Berg, organist for the meeting, as accompanist. Charles H. Gabriel, a well-known gospel-song composer helped Bennard with the harmonies. The completed version was then performed on June 7, 1913, by a choir of five, accompanied by a guitar in Pokagon, Michigan, at the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Pokagon." Bennard was born February 4, 1873 in Youngstown, Ohio and died October 10, 1958, in Reed City, Michigan. Here are the words to 'The Old Rugged Cross': "On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, The emblem of suffering and shame; And I love that old cross where the dearest and best For a world of lost sinners was slain. Refrain: So I'll cherish the old rugged cross, Till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to the old rugged cross, And exchange it some day for a crown. O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, Has a wondrous attraction for me; For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above To bear it to dark Calvary. [Refrain] In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, A wondrous beauty I see, For 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died, To pardon and sanctify me. [Refrain] To the old rugged cross I will ever be true; Its shame and reproach gladly bear; Then He'll call me some day to my home far away, Where His glory forever I'll share. [Refrain]"

Refrain: Faith is the victory! Faith is the victory! O glorious victory, that overcomes the world. His banner over us is love, Our sword the Word of God. We tread the road the saints above With shouts of triumph trod. By faith, they like a whirlwind's breath, Swept on o'er every field. The faith by which they conquered death Is still our shining shield. [Refrain] On every hand the foe we find Drawn up in dread array. Let tents of ease be left behind, And onward to the fray. Salvation's helmet on each head, With truth all girt about, The earth shall tremble 'neath our tread, And echo with our shout. [Refrain] To him that overcomes the foe, White raiment shall be giv'n. Before the angels he shall know His name confessed in Heav'n. Then onward from the hill of light, Our hearts with love aflame, We'll vanquish all the hosts of night, In Jesus' conqu'ring Name. [Refrain]"
