Little Richard
Richard Wayne Penniman. Richard Wayne Penniman was born on December 5, 1932 in Macon, GA. Little Richard was one of a dozen children. Macon is the home of the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.
Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix was an unknown guitar player looking for work when he hooked up with Little Richard.
Pat Boone. Pat Boone's version of the song outperformed Little Richard's on the pop charts. Little Richard's version made it to number 17, Boone's version made it to number 12. Boone also covered the hit "Long Tall Sally", but it was not met with commercial success.
religion. Little Richard had aspired to be a minister since he was a young man, and in 1957 he answered that calling and enrolled in the Oakwood Theological College in Huntsville, AL. Due to the British invasion reaching the height of popularity, Little Richard returned to rock and roll. After his experience at theology school, Little Richard would go on to record gospel albums as well as rock and roll. Little Richard eventually went on to earn a BA in Theological Studies from the college in 1970, eventually becoming an ordained minister in the Seventh Day Adventist church.
The Beatles. Little Richard was on a comeback tour in Germany when he shared the spotlight with an up and coming band called The Beatles at Hamburg's Star Club in Hamburg, Germany. Little Richard did tour England with The Rolling Stones in October of 1962.
Down and Out in Beverly Hills. Little Richard has also had roles in "Last Action Hero", "The Naked Truth" and "The Trumpet of the Swan". The song recorded for "Down and Out in Beverly Hills", titled "Great Gosh a'Mighty", becomes Little Richard's first hit in sixteen years.
Bill Clinton. Bill Clinton was a fan of Little Richard's and invited him to be a guest at his inauguration. Little Richard responded by performing at the event.
Phillip Bailey. Little Richard sang the title song to the Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito with Phillip Bailey. Bailey was a member of the band Earth Wind and Fire.
The Simpsons. Little Richard voiced an episode during the fourteenth season of "The Simpsons" titled "Special Edna". This is the episode where Principal Skinner proposes marriage to Edna Krabappel.
He was recuperating from an automobile accident.. Because Little Richard could not be at the ceremony in person, he videotaped his acceptance speech. The video was played and met with a standing ovation.
