Nonsense Lyrics Trivia Questions

1. "I'm blue, da ba dee da ba daa" are lyrics from the 1998 song, "Blue (Da Ba Dee)", by which Italian music group?

From Quiz
Did They Say That?!

Answer: Eiffel 65

"Blue (Da Ba Dee)" peaked at number six on the US Billboard Hot 100, but it performed well internationally, reaching the number one spot on many charts, including the UK Singles Chart, the European Hot 100 Singles, and Eurochart Hot 100. The single for the song debuted in Italy in 1998, but the song didn't become successful outside of Italy until 1999, when it was included on the group's 1999 debut album "Europop". Additionally, the song was nominated for the Best Dance Recording Grammy in 2001. Eiffel 65, a Eurodance group known for their use of Auto-Tune and pitch correction, formed in 1998 with members Maurizio Lobina, Jeffrey Jey, and Gabry Ponte. Gabry Ponte left the group in 2005 to pursue a solo career, and Lobina and Jey then formed the duo Bloom 06. The group reunited in 2010 to reform Eiffel 65, and they had iTunes releases of their Italian-language single, "Panico", and its English version, "Critical", in 2016.

2. Yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dog's eye/ Crabalocker fishwife pornographic priestess". What, would you repeat that, please? On second thought, don't, just tell me who sang those lyrics.

From Quiz Who Would Sing Something So Silly?

Answer: The Beatles

The song is "I Am the Walrus" and the band is The Beatles. In 1967, John Lennon was amused to find that a teacher at his old high school was having his students analyze Beatles lyrics. Lennon decided to write a song purposely nonsensical. The song was released as the flip side of "Hello Goodbye" and was included on the "Magical Mystery Tour" album. Goo goo goo joob!

From Quiz Who Forgot The Words?

Answer: Coloured girls

What can be said about 'Walk on the Wild Side'? Despite its references to certain taboo subjects (at least taboo in the early 1970's) the single reached number 16 in the US and number ten in the UK in 1972 and was Lou Reed's only solo single to reach the top 20 in the US. *Useless information* 'Walk on the Wild Side' makes reference to a number of regulars at Andy Warhol's New York studio, The Factory. BONUS Useless information 'Walk on the Wild Side' was produced by David Bowie.

Chuck Berry also had several number one hits on the US R & B charts, including 'Maybelline' and 'Johnny B. Goode'. He deserves better than to be remembered for what is really a novelty song, as he was one of the earliest 'rock and roll' stars.

From Quiz Walla Walla Bing Bang

12. "Slip inside the eye of your mind Don't you know you might find A better place to play?..." This lyric came from a band that believed they were "bigger than the Beatles". Who were they?

From Quiz Lyrics That Make No Sense

Answer: Oasis

It's a bit of nonsense, but let's not forget that Lennon and McCartney were capable of nonsense lyrics too - "you're what? - a walrus? Well, Ob la di, ob-la-da!" The Oasis lyric came from their smash it "Don't Look Back In Anger". Even if Oasis were castigated for their "bigger than the Beatles" claim, this song owed more than a little to the Fab Four. The piano intro was a tribute to "Imagine" and the line "the brains I had went to my head" was also inspired by John Lennon. Noel Gallagher claimed to have written it on the day of a concert in Paris and it was sung for the first time in front of 18,000 people that night. The single was a number one in the UK, but flopped in the USA, where people apparently just did not 'get' Oasis. Noel Gallagher reflected on that lack of success in the USA, telling "New Musical Express" Oasis "did not have a front man like Bono or Chris Martin". And he told CNN: "Not that I've got to justify it, but we did sell out the Hollywood Bowl and Madison Square Garden regularly. And I've got gold discs and platinum discs to prove it..."

13. In 1997, which band of brothers released a song with the lyrics, "MMMBop, ba duba dop"?

From Quiz Did They Say That?!

Answer: Hanson

The group had recorded a version of the song in 1996, but redid the song to give it a livelier tempo. When Songfacts interviewed Zac Hanson in 2004, he told them that the song lyrics were originally going to be background for another song, but they became a song of their own. Hanson is made up of three brothers--Zac, Taylor, and Isaac. They are from Tulsa, Oklahoma, and began their music careers in 1992. After having some issues with different record labels, the brothers formed their own record label, 3CG, in 2003.

Bagdasarian did the roles of Alvin, Theodore and Simon using a variable speed tape recorder. Ross won Grammy Awards in 1959 for Best Comedy Performance and Best Recording for Children He had a TV show for one season in 1961 called "The Alvin Show". Answer: Barry Mann

16. This is the intro to a record by The Teenagers featuring which singer? "Deh tum-mata-tum-mata-tum-mat-duh-duh Oooo wah oooo wah, oooooo wah oooo wah Oooooo wah oooo wah"

From Quiz Who Put The Ram In The Rama Lama Ding Dong?

Answer: Frankie Lymon

The Teenagers featuring Frankie Lymon had a number six hit on the US pop chart with "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" in 1956. It was a number one hit for three weeks on the UK chart the same year. The Frankie Lymon story is just one more sad tale among many in the music world. Born Franklin Joseph Lymon in Harlem N.Y. in 1942. At 12 years of age he joined a group named The Coup Devilles who were now known as The Ermines and The Premiers. They changed their name again in 1955 and became The Teenagers, releasing their first single "Why Do Fools Fall On Love" in 1956. In 1957 Frankie went solo after the group's final chart hit "Goody Goody". Although "Goody Goody" was issued as by The Teenagers featuring Frankie Lymon it was in fact a solo recording backed by session singers. He had one more US hit, "Little Bitty Pretty One" which had been recorded in 1957. Neither Frankie Lymon nor The Teenagers had any more chart success. After a bigamous marriage and the death of his daughter soon after birth he began an affair with Zola Taylor of The Platters. She claimed to have married him in Mexico in 1965, the same year he was drafted into the US Army. In 1967 he married Elmira Eagle (again bigamously) and was also given a dishonourable discharge after consistently being AWOL. At the age of 25 in 1968 he was found dead from a heroin overdose in his grandmother's bathroom; he had been addicted since the age of 15.

From Quiz Did They Say That?!

Answer: Bad Romance

The seemingly nonsense hook here is a repeated shortened form of the word 'romance'. "Bad Romance" was written by Lady Gaga and RedOne, and is a single from Lady Gaga's 2009 album "The Fame Monster". The song only made it to the number two spot on the US Billboard Top 100, but it topped many other charts, including the US Dance Club Songs, UK Singles Chart, and US Mainstream Top 40, as well as charts in many other countries. Lady Gaga's real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta and she was born in New York in 1986. Her stage persona is rather unique, and she is known for wearing outrageous outfits and costumes. She is often referred to as "Mother Monster" by her fans, which she calls "Little Monsters". Her music is mostly a mix of pop, dance, and electronic, but she likes to experiment and try new sounds and ideas. Lady Gaga has also participated in various philanthropic endeavors. In 2010, she donated money to reconstruction efforts in Haiti after the earthquake.

The other single, "Whatever Gets You thru the Night", was John Lennon's first US Number One hit single since the Beatles broke up. The album also topped the US album charts. From Quiz Who Put The Ram In The Rama Lama Ding Dong?
