Uptight. 'Subterranean Homesick Alien' was based on some real events. The first was a question he had to write an essay on at Abigdon school: 'If you were an alien from another planet arriving on Earth, how would you describe what you saw?' The second event was when Thom was driving down a country road and hit a bird. At the moment he stepped out of his car, he began thinking about alien abduction.

They used a program on a Mac called 'Simpletext'. It's a voice setting called 'Fred'.
G. The chord progression throughout is: G, B, C, Cm looped. Ed plays the clean parts during the verses with his Rickenbacker (through a Mesa Boogie amp with plenty of chorus). Jonny comes in just before the choruses with that famous 'chainsaw' effect before going mental with loads of distortion belting out of his small Fender tranny amp. In the video Thom is also playing guitar but performing live he's hands free so he can concentrate more on the whimpering and drooling.
Apple's. When I saw them live, Thom had two telecasters with apple stickers. I once saw him on the 'Jools Holland' program playing a brown accoustic guitar with an upside-down one on it.
a Fender Telecaster. He sometimes playes a Fender Starcaster. Thom used to always use guitars.
