The world got their first peek of Siouxsie Sioux as a member of The Sex Pistols' safety-pin-clad Bromley Contingent. But what is her real name? | Siouxsie & the Banshees 1976-1996
|
Susan Dallion. Susan Janet Dallion was born on May 27, 1957. Born the youngest of three children, Susan was described by family and friends as a loner. She found her niche in the infantile London punk rock scene for her shocking, but inspirational fashion sense which often included her wearing Nazi Swastika's on her arm. She would later become a member of the Bromley Contingent, the name for a special clique of Sex Pistols fans who were very close to the members. The Sex Pistols' controversial appearance on Bill Grundy's "Today Show: in December of 1976 raised eyebrows when Grundy stopped interviewing the Pistols, and started flirting with Siouxsie, who was standing with other Bromley Contingent members behind the band. "Let's meet after shall we?" Grundy asked. Guitarist Steve Jones proceeded to call him a "Dirty old man!" The world got their first glimpse of the alternative diva.
On their debut album "The Scream", released in November of 1978, The Banshees would pay homage to The Beatles with their version of the classic "Helter Skelter." What other 60s supergroup song would they later go on to cover? | Siouxsie & the Banshees 1976-1996

"You're Lost Little Girl" by The Doors. The Banshees version of The Doors' classic "You're Lost Little Girl" was featured on their album "Through The Looking Glass" released in 1987 -- an album entirely of cover tunes featuring the likes of Iggy Pop, Roxy Music, and Billie Holiday. The Banshees skipped The Beatles on this album, but had earlier recorded a great version of "Dear Prudence" which can be found on their album "Hyaena", released in 1984.
Budgie. Peter Edward Clark a.k.a. Budgie was the drummer for The Banshees. Following in the footsteps of Robert Smith and Steve Severin's side project The Glove, Siouxsie and Budgie created their own side project called The Creatures, also in 1981. Siouxsie and Budgie would later marry in 1991. Unfortunately this union wouldn't stand the test of time. They would later divorce in 2007.
Siouxsie & the Banshees cracked the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 with this single from the album "Peepshow." What's the name of this dance number?
"Strobe lights pump and flicker
Dry lips crack out for more
'Come bite on this rag doll, baby!
That's right, now hit the floor.
They're sneaking out the back door
She gets up from all fours
Rhinestone fools and silver dollars
Curdle into bitter tears." | Siouxsie & the Banshees 1976-1996
|
Peek-a-Boo. "Peek-a-boo Peek-a-boo
Golly jeepers
Where'd you get those peepers?
Peep show, creep show
Where did you get those eyes?"
"Peek-a-Boo" was featured on The Banshees album "Peepshow", released in 1988. Climbing to number fifty-three, the band considered it their masterpiece. They also made heavy use of the accordion and back masking during production. The band would also learn to play the song backwards. This danceable number gained lots of airtime on alternative radio and rotation on MTV.
Siouxsie & the Banshees would reach the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for the second and last time with this cryptic ode to Jayne Mansfield. What's the name of this number?
"It's davoon, Oh it's serene
In the fountains pink champagne
Someone carving their devotion
In the heart-shape pool of fame." | Siouxsie & the Banshees 1976-1996

Kiss Them For Me. "Nothing or no-one will ever
make me let you down
Kiss them for me -- I may be delayed
Kiss them for me -- I may find myself delayed.
On the road to New Orleans
A spray of stars hit the screen
As the 10th impact shimmered
the forbidden candles beamed."
American producer Stephen Hague took The Banshees in a whole new direction towards mainstream pop with the success of the club favorite "Kiss Them For Me." Peaking at number 23 on the U.S Billboard Hot 100, and number 1 on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks, this great number can be found on their tenth studio album "Superstition", released in 1991.
Batman Returns. "Face To Face" was recorded for Tim Burton's film "Batman Returns", released in 1992. Featured during the end credits, this haunting song can be found on the original movie soundtrack, as well as their compilation album "Twice Upon a Time: The Singles", released in October of 1992.
Which 80's musician filled in on guitar duties for Siouxsie & the Banshees after band member Jon Klein was fired before their final tour in 1995? | Siouxsie & the Banshees 1976-1996
|
Knox Chandler. Ex-Psychedelic Furs guitar player Knox Chandler went on the road with the Banshees for what would be their final tour, of the 90's that is. Jon Klein was fired due to contractual differences. The other choices are also guitar players of note: Andy Taylor (Duran Duran) Stuart Adamson (Big Country) and Billy Duffy (The Cult).
The Rapture. Siouxsie & the Banshees' final album "The Rapture" was released in January of 1995. Panned by critics, and not well received by diehard fans, it would prove to be the end for the band. They toured on till their final show in Belgium on July 21, 1995. Siouxsie & the Banshees would briefly reunite on their Seven Year Itch Tour of 2002, and would release a live album entitled "Seven Year Itch" in 2003. Siouxsie and Budgie would continue to work on their longtime side project, The Creatures, until they disbanded in 2005. Hope you enjoyed our little trip down memory lane. Cheers all.
Which song gave us these lyrics?
"They come and they go,
It's a parting of time,
They come...and they go,
Whilst we sit in our homes.
Sit back and enjoy...The Real McCoy!" | Siouxsie and the Banshees
|
Monitor. This song is from the album "Juju." I would count this album as their last pure punk effort, thanks to John McGeoch (of the post-punk band Magazine) on guitars.
Which song gave us these lyrics?
"Shadows look as you resist the gloom
Faded hues issue forth and bloom
A bed of leaves for a lover
Awake with a kiss and rise asunder
And when the party's over
You retreat in a realm of slumber" | Siouxsie and the Banshees
|
Party's Fall. This song is from the album, "Tinderbox." This album was released in 1986.
What song gave us these lyrics?
"From the fury pit, a reek of misery
Like a trumpet groan, tornado moan
The splendor splits like a golden skin
He and the wizards cry like hummingbirds
In treasure glows, your weeping wings
And a slaughter grins, on a pleasure spike" | Siouxsie and the Banshees
|
Pointing Bone. This is from the album "Hyaena." This album also holds the band's second cover of a Beatles song. This time it was "Dear Prudence."
Which song gave us these lyrics?
"Sickly sweet, his poison seeks
For the young ones who don't understand
The danger in his hands
With a jaundiced wink see his cunning slink
Oh trust in me my pretty one
Come walk with me my helpless one" | Siouxsie and the Banshees
|
Candyman. This song is from the album, "Tinderbox." It has been reported that this song was written by Sioux about an incident she had as a child. Whether or not it is fact is still up to debate.
What song gave us these lyrics?
"In the blood of the twinkling sky
Breathing in air drunk dry
There was once a time of rapture
All is lost ... a pale gleaming
Across this crooked land
Runs a crooked man
Our loved ones die
Under the hammer
Of the Soviet sun" | Siouxsie and the Banshees
|
Rhapsody. This song is from the album, "Peepshow." The title track of the album "Peek-a-Boo" ran into some legal troubles for the lines in the chorus. They resembled those of the song "Jeepers Creepers."
Did these lyrics come from the song "Love in a Void"?
"Too many bigots for my liking
Too many critics...too few writing
Rabid dogs that aren't biting"
| Siouxsie and the Banshees
|
Yes. This song was released as single during the Banshees' early years as a punk band in the late seventies, before their transition to Goth rock. It does not, however, appear on an album, as it was the B-side to the single "Mittageisen (Metal Postcard)."
What song gave us these lyrics?
"As the rust creeps
Corrosion seeps a rotting seed
Eat me -- feed me
With your belching foul breath
Your destructive kiss death" | Siouxsie and the Banshees
|
We Hunger. This is from the album, "Hyaena." This song is the second on this album, following the amazing opener "Dazzle."
Dear Prudence. Their cover of The Beatles' "Dear Prudence" was featured on the album "Hyaena." The cover itself fits in well with the rest of the album, music wise, as it-as do most of the other songs-features synthesizers in the forefront instead of guitars. I guess something needed to fill the void of John McGeoch and apparently Robert Smith couldn't do it. Need proof? Listen to their albums "Kaleidoscope" and "Juju."
What song gave us these lyrics?
"In the sharp gust of love
My memory stirred
When time wreathed a rose
A garland of shame
Its thorn my only delight
War torn, afraid to speak
We dare to breathe
Majestic
Imperial
A bridge of sighs" | Siouxsie and the Banshees
|
The Last Beat of my Heart. This was from the album, "Peepshow." This song is accompanied by a very simple music video. It pans out very slowly from Siouxsie Sioux and shows a shot of the band before they all fade away.
And finally, what song gave us these lyrics?
"A sideways crawl, a sideways scrawl
The Cancer Crab is on us all
I kissed your face
I kissed the sand
I heard you sigh
There was no sound
Thrashed and spat back at the ocean
But there was nothing, no commotion
Just my lonely stupid notion
Trapped again in still life motion" | Siouxsie and the Banshees
|
Desert Kisses. This is from the album, "Kaleidoscope." This entire album deals with mental illness, most obvious in the song "Christine."
