Tangerine Dream
Berlin. The first electronic Punk album in history, 'Electronic Meditation' was recorded as a rehearsal at an old factory in Oct. 1969 in Berlin.
Optical Race. A Tangerine Dream recording which brought the band and Peter Baumann together again after eleven years, but this time it was not on a musical exploration. Peter Baumann had just founded his record label 'Private Music' on which the album was then released.
Zeit. 'Zeit' was Tangerine Dream's first double album. 'Atem' was released in 1973, and quickly became a favourite of DJ John Peel. 'Rockoon' was released in 1992, and was the first to feature just Edgar and Jerome Froese. 'Tyranny of Beauty' features a track called 'Largo'.
Miles. 'Live Miles' marked Chris Franke's last live performance with the band.
With the exception of some guest appearances (most notably Jerome Froese), 'Lily on the Beach' was recorded by Edgar Froese and Paul Haslinger. In which two cities did the recordings take place? | Tangerine Dream - The Melrose years
|
Berlin and Vienna. All recordings took place between July and August 1989.
Melrose. The album cover is a bit of a clue, as it features a shot of Jerome Froese, Edgar Froese and Paul Haslinger riding bikes. The tour programme from their 1989 world tour features many extra shots that didn't make it on to album cover.
Los Angeles. Unfortunately, another grim night at the Oscars for the TD boys. Tangerine Dream's film scores never received the recognition they deserved. William Friedkin regretted using 'Tubular Bells' for 'The Exorcist', and asked Tangerine Dream to provide the score for his next film, 'Sorcerer'. The film bombed, and Tangerine Dream didn't write a film score for several years after.
Atari. It was all done on the Atari ST. In the late 80's, the Atari ST was a state of the art machine. The ST's low cost, built-in MIDI ports, and fast, low-latency response times made it a favorite with musicians. The ST was the first home computer with built-in MIDI ports, and there was plenty of MIDI-related software for use professionally in music studios, or by amateur enthusiasts. The popular Windows/Macintosh applications Cubase and Logic Pro originated on the Atari ST. Another popular and powerful ST music sequencer application, Dr. T's KCS, contained a "Multi-Program Environment" that allowed ST users to run other applications, such as the synthesizer patch editing software XoR (now known as Unisyn on the Macintosh), from within the sequencer application. Even today some people (such as Fatboy Slim) are still using the Atari ST for composing music.
Peter Baumann. Klaus Schulze left the band in 1970 to form Ash Ra Tempel with Manuel Göttsching. Michael Hoenig was hired to replace Peter Baumann in Tangerine Dream for an Australian tour and BBC recorded London Royal Albert Hall concert, and subsequently left Agitation Free, which broke up shortly after. Baumann rejoined Tangerine Dream soon after, and Hoenig went on to collaborate with Klaus Schulze on the shortlived project, Timewind. Conrad Schnitzler was one of the founding members of Tangerine Dream, and later the band Kluster. He left both bands soon, to focus on his solo-work. None of these three. however, have any connection with Private Music.
Livemiles. 'Livemiles' was released in 1998, the same year as 'Optical Race', and marked the last live recording featuring founder member Chris Franke.
Too hot for my chinchilla. 'Crystal Curfew' is from 'Lily on the Beach', but is track six, 'Art of Vision' is from 'Melrose', and 'Twin Soul Tribe is from 'Optical Race'.

Rockoon. Two years after 'Melrose', 'Rockoon' and 'Quinoa (album)' were released in 1992, followed by 'Turn of the Tides' in 1993.
