Robert F. Scott. Terribly discouraged after making the tortuous journey, Scott and all his team members died on the return trip. The bodies of Scott and two of his crew members were not discovered until the following November, when they were found dead in their tent.

Roald Amundsen. Amundsen's original intention was to go to the North Pole. But he changed his plans after he learned in 1909 that the North Pole had been reached.
