Now there's real romance for you! He didn't wish to marry out of love or lust, but to swell his purse. Who could resist such a charmer as that? He was 32 years old by then and no heir to the throne was in sight, so parliament thought they'd give him a hurry along by dangling a golden carrot in front of the regal donkey's nose. George was also a spendthrift who had accumulated such huge debts that he couldn't even afford to pay the interest on his outstanding bills let alone pay them off. Sophia Dorothea was born in 1666 the only child of George William, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg by his long-term mistress, Eleonore whom George eventually married. She is best remembered for her affair with Philip von Königsmarck that led to her being imprisoned in Castle of Ahlden for the last thirty years of her life.

George I famously had his wife Sophia Dorothea incarcerated in the castle of Ahlden for decades for alleged adultery with a Swedish count, but thought nothing of having two mistresses himself - Sophia von Kielmansegge, Countess of Darlington (she was also George's illegitimate half-sister!) and Ermengarde Melusina von der Schulenberg, Duchess of Kendal. Both women were distinctly unappealing physically, one being extremely fat and the other extremeley thin, so that contemporary wags called them 'the Elephant and the Maypole.'

The court at Hanover was hostile to Sophia from the very beginning, and her mother-in-law disliked her intensely. Eventually George came to despise his wife as well, and people went out of their way to slight her. Probably bored and very lonely, Sophia developed a friendship with the Swedish Count Phillip Christoph von Königsmarck. At the time many people insisted that she and von Königsmarck were lovers, but this is not certain. Unfortunately George chose to believe the rumours, and so had Königsmarck killed. George then had his marriage dissolved on the grounds that Sophia had abandoned her husband, and with the help of her father, had her locked up in the castle of Ahlden. Although Sophia was allowed to move about the castle grounds (under supervision), and given sufficient servants and income, she was never allowed to see her children or her father again. She lived a further 32 years.

His union with Cecelia was childless. 6.) Adolphus and Augusta had three children: George, Augusta and Mary. Mary's union produced several children one of which was Mary wife of George V. The unions of Frederick, Charlotte, Elizabeth and Mary were childless.

The Act was proposed by the King as a direct result of the marriage of his brother, Prince Henry Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn. He had married a commoner in 1771. The prince or princess must have royal permission to marry until the age of twenty-five. However, any member of the Royal Family over the age of 25 who has been refused the sovereign's consent may marry one year after giving notice to the Privy Council of their intention to so marry, unless both houses of Parliament expressly declare their disapproval. This Act is still in practice to this day.

To be exact, Anne created him Duke and Marquess of Cambridge, Earl of Milford Haven, Viscount Northallerton and Baron of Tewkesbury. George's relationship with his father was never easy; some have speculated that George resented the treatment meted out to his mother, and one story says he tried to swim the moat at Ahlden Castle to see her, but was uncusccessful. His sister, Sophia Dorothea, married King Frederick William I of Prussia, and struck up a correspondance with her mother, no doubt a comfort to the lonely elder Sophia Dorothea, who died in 1726. George II's sister, the Queen of Prussia, died in 1757.
