Bill Werber
25. Bill joined the Sox in 1933 at the beginning of FDRS first administration. He batted .259 in the season.
New York Yankees. After beginning his career with the Yankees in 1930, they sold him to the Red Sox in midseason of 1933. Bill was a teammate of Babe Ruth and often played cards with the Babe and Gehrig on long train rides as a member of the Yankees.
3rd Base. Bill was not only a good fielder, he was also a fast runner, and once helped lead the Cincinnati Reds to a title in 1940 with a .370 batting average in the World Series.
3. Bill was known for his speed around the bases and was surprised one day when Jimmie Foxx beat him in a 100-yard dash, Werber later said that Jimmie Foxx was the best that he ever played against or with. Werber led the league in stolen bases in 1934, 1935, and 1937.
11. He played in 11 seasons, spread out from 1930-1942. Bill's career may have lasted longer, had he not kicked that oak bucket in the dugout, which caused him to have surgery on his toe and play the rest of his seven years on a bum foot.
Pinky Higgins. Bill was traded after four seasons with the Red Sox, and was just before the 1937 season.
200. 1934 was Bill's best season with the Red Sox. He had 200 hits, scored 129 runs, stole a league high 40 bases, and hit .321.
New York Yankees. He signed and played with the Yankees in 1930. After Bill played his Major League career, he turned to the insurance industry business with his father.
100. Bill lived a nice long life and had a wife named Kathryn (deceased in 2000), along with a son Bill Jr. and a daughter Patricia.
