Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
CFL Rules
I am a former Heisman Trophy winner. I am famous for completing, "The Pass", a 48-yard Hail Mary (which actually traveled 65 yards in the air) to win the 1984 Orange Bowl. I've won 2 Grey Cups, and I also played in the NFL. I'm considered by many to be one the greatest CFL players ever. Who am I? | CFL Rules
|
Doug Flutie. Doug played for B.C., Calgary, and Toronto, where he helped the Argos go 15-3 in 1996 after a humiliating 4-14 season in 1995. That season he also led the Argos to a dramatic Grey Cup victory. In 2004 he played for the San Diego Chargers.
In CFL rules, I am receiving a punt for Team A. As the ball approaches me, a member of Team B stands a yard away from me and hits me as I catch the ball. I drop the ball, and another member of Team B picks it up and runs to the endzone. What happens? | CFL Rules
|
It's a penalty for the Team B. If you're familiar with NFL rules, you probably said it's a touchdown. But in the CFL, there is no fair catch rule. However, a 5-yard halo is given to a player returning a punt, so it would be ruled a penalty for not respecting the 5-yard halo.
I am at my opponent's 15-yard line. I snap the ball and my kicker purposely drops the ball. After the ball bounces once, he kicks it, sending it through the uprights. Is this a field goal? | CFL Rules
|
Yes. This kick is called a drop kick and is legal.
I am ready to block a field goal. As the kick comes my way, I climb my DTs back and jump up, blocking the kick. This is called what? | CFL Rules
|
Pyramiding. A weird rule. If it's a rule, that means it's been tried before. This is a 5-yard penalty and can also be called if the player blocking the kick, uses the uprights to gain elevation.
I sacked the opposing QB in the endzone. What happens now? | CFL Rules
|
My team gets to choose from any of these options. This is a little weird, but the team captain of the scoring team gets to pick from those three options what his team wants to do.
In the CFL and its 3rd and 10, the QB only throws for 5 yards. What happens? | CFL Rules
|
Turnover on Downs. The CFL only has three downs. This makes the CFL much more exciting because teams need to pass on second down, so there is more long passing going on.
I am a quarterback at my own 45 yard line. I throw a 30-yard pass to an open receiver, and he is tackled before he gets to run any further. Where is the ball spotted? | CFL Rules
|
My opponents' 35 yard line. If you said my opponents' 25 yard line, it's because you're thinking NFL rules. The CFL plays with a 110-yard field, with the 55 yard line being called the center line.
I am a punter at my opponents' 30 yard line, and my punt goes 40 yards and bounces out of bounds. What happens? | CFL Rules
|
My team gets one point and we will kick the ball off (It's a touchback, My opponents get the ball at their own 20, My opponents get the ball at their own 5, It's a re-punt). This single point play is called a "rouge". When a kick, punt, or field goal attempt goes past the end zone, it's an automatic point for the kicking team and will be followed with a kickoff just like after a touchdown or field goal. This is why the endzone is so much larger in the CFL.
Canadian Amateur Rugby Association. The Grey Cup was donated in 1909 by His Excellency Lord Albert Henry Earl Grey, the Governor General of Canada.
World War I. 1916-1919 were the only years since 1909 in the 20th century, where there was no Grey Cup champion crowned.
As long as no special considerations have been made by the commissioner, what is the length of halftime break? | Rules of the CFL
|
14 minutes. It is possible for the commissioner to allow halftime to go longer than this, so that an event or special ceremony may take place.
Which is the penalty if a player attempts to change their jersey on the field, so that they are eligible to play at a different position? | Rules of the CFL
|
The player must leave the game until the proper playing number is determined. The change is made so that a player with an ineligible number may become an eligible receiver.
Which is the maximum number of import players a team is allowed to have on the game roster? | Rules of the CFL

Inside the three minute warning of any half, which is the penalty for a time count violation? | Rules of the CFL

Loss of down on first or second down, 10 yard penalty on third down. This rule is to prevent teams from killing the clock by taking time count penalties.
What is it called when a player drops the ball to the ground, and then kicks it just after it bounces, potentially for a field goal? | Rules of the CFL
|
Drop kick. Just like in rugby, if the ball goes through the uprights it counts as a field goal.
What is the penalty if a quarterback enters the game as a defensive player? | Rules of the CFL
