Behind the center.. The sweeper is kind of like a wing, except in the middle of the field.
You are playing the game and getting near the 25 yard line, when you hear the official blow his whistle and raise one leg and touch it. What happened? | Field Hockey
|
Someone was advancing. Advancing is probably the easiest foul to commit. If the ball bounces off your foot and you continue to play it, the other team will be awarded a free hit.
A girl on the other team was the one advancing, and your team is awarded a free hit. You are chosen to take it. What is the most common thing people do to the ball when they have a free hit? | Field Hockey
|
Drive it. Most of the time, the girl taking the free hit drives it, because when you take a free hit, you want to send it as far as you can.
When you take the hit, the other team gets it and starts dribbling down the field. You try to get the ball back and you start trying to use your stick to get the ball away. Then the whistle blows. What did you do? | Field Hockey
|
You were hacking. Hacking is when a player has the ball, and a player from the other team is constantly trying to get the ball by hitting at it, hitting the other player's stick, and smacking at the ball.
You are on the varsity level. How long are the halves of your game? | Field Hockey

11. Field hockey is much closer to soccer than ice hockey. There are ten players on the field plus the goalie.
Unlimited times. A team can make a substitution as many times as they want too during a game. They can do it at any time, even while the ball is in play. Teams have to be very careful not to have too many players on the field, so usually they wait until the player coming off is almost at the sideline before the new player comes on.
Umpires. There are usually two umpires, one for each side of the field. Some games have more than two.
flat side only. The referee will call a foul if they use the back (curved) side of their stick. Players have to flip their stick over instead. Players can use most of the flat side of the stick, as long as the ball does not touch their hands.
Obstruction. Obstruction is when you block somebody from getting to the ball, whether intentionally or not. You can turn your back to a player, but you have to be moving your feet and the ball if you have it.
3. The sweep hit is getting down really low to sweep your stick along the ground. The push pass is to push the ball to a teammate. Your stick does not make a sound when you do this. The most common type of hit is the drive. This is like an ice hockey slapshot.
Scotland. It was first played in the Scottish highlands in the 1700s. It used to be called Shinty.
turf/grass. It is played outside on turf or grass. It is usually played on turf because the ball rolls better, and the grass fields get chopped up easily. Wood would be scratched by the sticks, and gravel would damage the sticks.
