The Quarterback Controversy. It all started at a preseason game in London England between the 49ers and the Miami Dolphins. A reporter interviewed Bill Walsh and Don Shula before the game and asked each of them, if they had any concerns entering the 1988 season. Shula didn't say anything important, but when it was Walsh's turn to speak he replied "We might have a quarterback controversy." In the first game of the 1988 season Montana led the 49ers to a 34-33 victory over the New Orleans Saints but injured his elbow in the process. The next week Walsh started Steve Young agenst the New York Giants. Young didn't play very well, and he was replaced by Montana who led the 49ers to victory by throwing a 78 yard touchdown pass to Jerry Rice.
