Black and White. After Dale's death, Richard Childress repainted the black #3 white and renumbered it with a black #29. Kevin ran one race with the black and white car and then RCR switched to a white car with Red lettering. Kevin won in only his third start with that car and went on to finish 9th in points in his rookie year. Kevin did drive a blue and white Winston Cup car in 2001. For the fall race at Loudon, NH the #29 car was painted white with blue lettering. This was the race that was post-poned due to 9/11 and was run on the day after Thanksgiving. Kevin started on the outside pole and actually led a lap that day before finishing the day in 26th position.

The scuffle with Greg Biffle also occured in 2002, but it happened several days before the truck race incident.
