81. 174 is the number of goals the Devils scored that season, 82 is the number of games they played, and 38 is the amount of games the Devils won. That leaves 81 which is obviously the amount of points scored. The way the points system works in the NHL is you get 2 points for any win and 1 point for any loss in overtime or shootout. 76 of the Devils 81 points came from wins, the remaining 5 points came from loses in OT or shootout. This was the least amount of points they have scored in a single season since 1990-91 when they scored 79 pts, except for the lockout shortened 1994-95 season where they won their first Stanley Cup.
