f. Sachin Tendulkar had never scored a century against Australia on Australian soil (though he had scored many centuries at other venues). Don Bradman. In 1996, during the World cup matches, the legendary Australian batsman Sir Donald Bradman was watching a match on TV. This was the first match he played after his father's death. In the 1999 world cup, Sachin got a shock, when he learnt of the death of his father Ramesh Tendulkar. Sachin left the tournament mid-way to attend the last rites of his father, thereby missing a match. After he came back, he played the first match against Kenya and scored an unbeaten 140. Yorkshire. Following his impressive entry into International cricket, Sachin was offered a contract to play in English county cricket for Yorkshire. He was the first overseas born player to play for Yorkshire (another of his countless records). He played in 16 matches for Yorkshire and scored 1,070 runs at an average of 47.
Pakistan. At the age of 16, Sachin made his International debut against Pakistan when he played the first test in Karachi. The Indian captain for the series was Krishnamachari Srikkanth. Vinod Kambli. During a school tournament, Sachin and his close friend Vinod Kambli put up a record partnership of 664 in 1988. It was this performance which brought Sachin into the limelight. Vinod Kambli also later played for India, but was not as successful as Sachin. Gambhir and Sehwag are from Delhi and are juniors to Sachin. Sanjay Manjrekar is Sachin's senior from Mumbai and was a close friend of Sachin. But in later years (2007 onwards), Manjrekar has been a critic of Sachin's performance.
Ramakant Achrekar. Sachin Tendulkar studied in the Sharadashram school in Mumbai. His cricketing coach was Ramakant Achrekar whose contribution was very important in the rise of Tendulkar. Reportedly, coach Achrekar was so impressed by Sachin's batting, that he would offer a coin to any bowler who would dismiss Sachin; however if no bowler could get him out, Sachin would get the coin. Sachin reportedly got 13 such coins from his coach.
