Secretariat
No Secretariat quiz could be complete without this question: Who was Secretariat's Kentucky Derby winning stablemate? | Secretariat
|
Riva Ridge. Riva Ridge won the Kentucky Derby in 1972. He was a great racehorse, but because he shared a barn, a trainer, and an owner with Secretariat, he is often overlooked as a racehorse. Everyone remembers him because of Secretariat, but very few people give him the respect he deserves.
foot problems. No horse is immune to foot problems. Secretariat suffered from laminitis. It is treatable, but it is not curable. It can get so painful, the horse is no longer comfortable walking. Secretariat was put to sleep when the pain was to much.
How many lengths did Secretariat win the Belmont by? | Secretariat
|
31 lengths. He also finished around 6 seconds ahead of Twice A Prince, who ran second. Racing people will tell you that this was the race that broke Sham's heart, who finished last and never raced again.
Sham. Poor Sham was one of the greatest runners-up of all time. He would have been a champion if he hadn't had to race Secretariat.
Onion. Onions make you cry. And Onion got the best of Secretariat whenever they met. He was trained by the great H. Allen Jerkins, who was known as 'The Giant Killer' because he was(and is) able to defeat 'unbeatable' horses. Upset raced Man O' War.
Who rode Secretariat to his win in the Triple Crown? | Secretariat
|
Ron Turcotte. The night before the Belmont, Secretariat's trainer, Lucien Laurin, had a bad dream. He dreamed that Ron Turcotte fell off at the start of the race. Turcotte stayed on and Secretariat won the Triple Crown.
Lucien Laurin. Lucien Laurin trained Secretariat and Riva Ridge.
Eddie Sweat was Secretariat's groom.
Bold Ruler. Bold Ruler was also a champion. Nasrullah (Ireland) 1940 and Miss Disco (USA) 1944 were the sire and dam of Bold Ruler (USA) 1954. Secretariat was foaled in 1970.
Somethingroyal. Princequillo (Ireland) 1940, and Imperatrice (USA) 1938 were the sire and dam of Somethingroyal (USA) 1952.
How old was Secretariat when he won Horse of the year for the first time? | Secretariat
|
2. Very few two-year-olds are ever named Horse of the Year. Of those rare horses, fewer still are champions at three. Secretariat was truly a superhorse.
2 and three fifths seconds. Just to add one last finishing touch to Secretariat's incredible resume, I thought that the fact that he beat a track record by almost 3 seconds would help explain his magnificence. Along the way, he also beat his own record for the mile and a quarter.
Belmont Park, NY. The statue stands as a memorial to the greatest racehorse who ever lived. There are also bronze statues of Secretariat at the Hall of Fame in Saratoga (New York), and at the Kentucky Horse Park.
Prior to Secretariat's win, how many lengths was the previous record winning margin in the Belmont Stakes? | The Legend of Secretariat
|
25. Count Fleet had set the previous record for his win in the Belmont by 25 lengths in 1943. Secretariat shattered that with his 31 length romp.
Laminitis. Sadly, Secretariat had to be put to sleep due to complications of laminitis, an incurable hoof disease. He died on October 4, 1989.
By how many lengths did Secretariat beat Sham by in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes? | The Legend of Secretariat
|
2 and a half lengths. In both races he flew ahead of Sham by two and a half lengths and won. In the Belmont, however he outdistanced Sham by a remarkable 45 lengths.
Wood Memorial Stakes. He lost this race to Angle Light and Sham (his greatest rival). It has been said that he had an abscess on his lower lip that was causing him problems before that race and that it caused him to lose. The abscess popped before the Derby and then...well the rest is history.
1:59.4. He was the first to run a sub 2:00 Derby.
no. He finished fourth after a rough start. It was a five and a half furlong maiden race at Aqueduct. He was bumped from both sides coming out from the gate and nearly went down. He composed himself and came flying into fourth.
The Bride. It was part of an agreement that was made between Meadow Stable and Claiborne Farm. Meadow Stable sent mares to be bred to Bold Ruler at Claiborne. Each year a coin was flipped to determine who would get the horses born. The Farm took The Bride and next year Meadow Stable got Secretariat. Some prize for losing a coin toss, huh? He also had another sister who was a stakes winner herself named Syrian Sea (thanks to sporty1 for this information).
5. The fact that he actually lost lends an almost human quality to him. I also wanted to show that being undefeated doesn't constitute greatness.
