Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
Avengers
John Steed. John Steed is secret agent extraordinaire.
Cathy Gale. Cathy Gale was played by Honor Blackman who left the show after only two seasons. She then appeared in the James Bond film "Goldfinger."
Mrs. Emma Peel. Mrs. Emma Peel, played by Diana Rigg, is the most remembered of Steed's partners.
Tara King. Tara King (played by Canadian Linda Thorson) disappointed many viewers after Diana Rigg had left the show. The original run of the series was cancelled after Linda's first and only season on the show.
Patrick MacNee. Patrick MacNee played the debonaire Steed through the entirety of both runs of the show ("The Avengers" 1961-1968 and the "New Avengers" 1976-1977). Though often thought of as the consumate British gentleman actor, MacNee actually became an American citizen in 1959 well before the show began production.
1967. The color era began during Mrs. Peel's reign and the show was actually on the air in the U.S. at this time as well.
3 Stable Mews. His apartment is filled with very nice wood panelling (yuck!).
Mrs. Peel. He always called her "Mrs. Peel" until the episode which recreated her leaving "The Organization." Then he called her "Emma." Funnily enought though he always referred to Tara King as "Tara."
Mother. Steed's superior is Mother, played by Patrick Newell. Newell actually turns up a couple of times as different characters in earlier seasons of the show. The character of Mother was not a regular until the final season of the show, 1968.
His bowler hat and his umbrella. Steed's bowler hat and umbrella became his trade marks. Though he often had a red carnation he was also frequently without it.
ITV. The show was originally shown on ITV and funded by ABC, later it was bought by the BBC.
Eeurp!. 'Eeurp!' is Steed's amusing attempt at mimicking the sound made by the title villian - the Winged Avenger.
Linda Thorson. Linda Thorson played Tara King from 1968-1969.
John Steed. John Steed, played by Patrick MacNee, first appeared in the very first episode of the series, 'Hot Snow', and appeared in almost every single episode of 'The Avengers' until the end of the series with 'Bizzare'. He then appeared as Steed in a champagne advert in France alongside Tara King and was the only character from the original series to be carried over to 'The New Avengers'.
To avenge the death of his fiancée.. Only the first 20 minutes of 'Hot Snow' exist now as the rest of it was destroyed in order to make room to store other footage in the archives.
"We're needed.". Throughout the first sixteen episodes of season five (the first colour season)each episode had a 'We're needed' scene after the episode title. One example of which is from the episode 'The Hidden Tiger' in which Emma removes a strip of old wallpaper whilst redecorating her flat to reveal written beneath, "Mrs. Peel." Steed then enters and removes another strip of wallpaper to reveal, "We're Needed!"
Emma Peel. 'A Touch of Brimstone' was the 21st Emma Peel episode shown and was banned in the US due to a scene involving Emma being whipped.
2 . It is a little known fact that Emma Peel was played by two actors! Elizabeth Shepherd was originally cast as Steed's partner, but after filming one and a half episodes ('The Town of No Return' and the first half if 'The Murder Market'), the general consensus was that she just did not fit the part. This was an expensive decision to make, too, considering how much filming was done. But the switch to Diana Rigg, as history shows, paid off.
2 . The first time is in 'Who's Who???' after Steed has swapped minds with an enemy agent. He is luring Mrs. Peel into a trap so that she too can have her mind switched when he calls her Emma. This is one of the three things that makes her suspicious - the other two being that he doesn't want a drink and that he fails to hold the door open and let her pass through it first.
The other time is when Steed and Mrs. Peel say their farewells to each other in a touching scene at the end of 'The Forget-Me-Knot' shortly before she leaves with her husband.
Venus Smith and Martin King. Venus Smith was a singer and Martin King was a doctor.
