Black Books
Dylan Moran. He is also the co-writer of the show along with Graham Linehan.
Cooking the Books. In this episode, Bernard starts insulting a group of skinheads in order to get beaten up so he doesn't have to do his taxes.
Fran. Fran owns the shop next door to Bernard called 'Nifty Gifty'.
Manny. Manny leaves home because Bernard keeps ignoring him and telling him to be quiet.
Bernard. Due to Manny not listening to the security code for the new door.
Bill Bailey. Begins working at the shop in episode two.
Grapes of Wrath. He calls it some kind of delicious biscuit.
Jam. He takes on bite and throws it up onto the ceiling.
Lighter. She only finds out at the end of the episode because Manny uses it to light Bernard's cigarette.
Little Book of Calm. He comes out with all sorts of phrases like 'Leave town with an orange and pretend you're laughing at it'.
'Black Books'. Bernard owns the shop and Manny works for him.
Accountant. We saw Manny as an accountant in the first episode. When he came into the bookshop he told Bernard that he hated his job.
'A giant ear waiting for your songs of niceness'. She says this when Ben suggests he will ask the restaurant to play his tape of favourite songs. The robot quote comes from Manny when he was using Freddy’s neck massager; the pencil quote was Manny’s suggestion as a present for Freddy after they had drunk his expensive wine; and fizzy good is what Bernard’s name for Alka Seltzer is.

Dials the number. Manny claims he used to work a lot with his mobile and now he gets a pain in the head just before it rings. Bernard thinks this a great game and at the end of the show uses the redial function to keep calling him.
She walks in front of a moving a car. Fran uses the “awesome power of the blank” that Bernard told her about to let her boyfriend know she wasn’t happy with him.
'Big and Beardy'. Manny left Bernard’s because he was being treated unfairly. Unfortunately he got himself involved with a photographer of dubious quality.
7000 pounds. The wine Le Vin du Rosier was made by grapes that grew on a rosebush. Freddy was going to present the bottle to the Pope.
Carter. He drank too much coffee and watched too many videos of “The Sweeney”.
Mamba Burger. He tried to first buy food there but didn’t have any money. After being refused to purchase food by using his belt, he took a job there.
'A little man'. The little man was mentioned when the security system was being fitted for the shop. Manny was concentrating on how to use the system because he was fascinated by a little toy football player that the security guy had in his hair.
Graham Linehan. Graham co-wrote "Black Books", Tamsin plays the part of Fran and Bill plays Manny. Although he isn't credited, Bill does ad-lib some sceens on his own and with Dylan thoughout the series. Nick Wood directs the show along with Graham, who also has a few cameos in two of the episodes.
On phone. Bernard produces the "on phone" note, just before stating that he will need leather bound pounds to match his leather wallet!
Wonder Woman. But does he have the hips to pull off Wonder Woman?
A lighter. A lighter. It's very in, apparently!
little book of calm . The scene where Manny swallows "The Little Book of Calm", had to be shot in two halves. This is because whilst pulling the "big chin" face and talking on the phone, Bill couldn't stop himself from laughing any longer and had to compose himself before going on, bless!

An aquarium. Quite apt really, considering he drinks like a fish!
Or any of the others. "Or any of the others." Rules that must have been dreamt up in a drunken state, surely?
It says 'closed' on both sides. Closed on both sides, an ideal sign for Bernard.
Scrambled egg with a comb from a shoe. It was rather difficult to think up other foods to be eaten in unusual ways. "Scrambled egg with a comb from a shoe" is still the funniest!
Ear. "I am a giant ear, waiting for your songs of niceness."
