Cagney and Lacey
Muriel. Muriel watched the Lacey boys after school until she decided that she needed some more time for herself.
Breast. In a dramatic two-part episode, Mary Beth found out she had breast cancer and was told she had to have a mastectomy. After being convinced by Christine to get a second opinion, Mary Beth opted for a lumpectomy instead since the cancer hadn't spread to the lymph nodes.
Loretta Swit. Loretta Swit played Cagney in the tv pilot movie, then was replaced by Meg Foster. Audience approval was low and the show was pulled until fans banded together to demand its return. Sharon Gless took over as Cagney and played her until the series finale.
Paint the ladies room. The ladies room at the 14th precinct was often used as an impromptu private meeting room for Cagney and Lacey. It was a minty green color and in definite need of painting.
ACLU lawyer. Christine and David often butted heads because of the difference in their professions.
Alice Christine. Christine's car broke down while taking Mary Beth to the hospital, so she flagged down a speeding semi to take them. Harvey was out of town so Christine stepped in as Mary Beth's Lamaze coach.
Marines. When Harve Jr. turned 18, he enlisted in the Marines, much to the dismay of his father, Harve Sr.
Charlie. Charlie, played by Dick O'Neill, was a former cop and loved his alcohol.
Lieutenant Samuels. Al Waxman played the role of Lt. Samuels.
14th. The 14th precinct was located in Manhattan.
They are promoted to Major Case Squad.. Cagney and Lacey land in the middle of an FBI investigation and shoot out and end up getting promoted to Major Cases.
Canary Yellow. In the episode where Cagney's car is stolen, and throughout the series, she describes the car over and over again as Canary Yellow.
cheesecake. Christine heard gossip that the Lieutenant's favorite dessert was canoli. So she and Mary Beth hand made 250 of them for him, because he was receiving the Distinguised Service Award at the annual dinner. At the end of the show, Samuels tells Christine and Mary Beth that his favorite dessert is cheesecake.
She collared a woman who picked his pocket and he helped her get out of the arrest.. After seeing a play, a woman pick pocketed David. When she searched the woman's purse, David accused her of illegal search and seizure. She wanted to know how a dentist would know this. David told her he was a lawyer. This is the conversation with Lacey the next day.
Cagney: "No, not an everyday lawyer, he turned out to be an American Civil Liberties Union lawyer."
Lacey: "I'll bet it was funny."
Cagney: "Sgt. Lubin was funny - 'We'd all like to thank Sgt. Cagney for her new time saving procedure in bringing in the perpetrator and the lawyer. Why it adds a whole new meaning to revolving door justice.'"
Lacey: "What happened to the pick pocket?"
Cagney: "She walked, but she gave David back his wallet."
Albert Grand. Christine had a heck of a time following clues left by the old time jewel thief Albert Grand.
photographer. During the run of the show, Christine mentioned that she originally wanted to be a photographer and had studied in France to do so. She changed her mind and became a cop because she was always very close to her father Charlie, and wanted to get back at her mother for separating the family. The "Cagney and Lacey" novel also mentioned Christine had studied in France to be a photographer.
She had a trust fund set up for her by her mother.. Christine and her brother both received money from a trust fund set up by their mother. Christine said she became a cop because she wanted to be like her dad, and to get back at her mother for splitting up their family and not accepting her dad.
going undercover as prostitutes. In an interview, Sharon Gless once commented that Cagney believed that male police officers thought all women detectives were good for two things - for sleeping with and for going undercover as prostitutes. It was Cagney and Lacey's job to change their minds.
They made a drug bust.. Cagney and Lacey happened upon drug bust. The bust got them plain clothes and a detective's badge.
