Dexter
Morgan. Dexter was raised by his adopted father and mentor, Harry Morgan.
Homicide detective. Harry Morgan is Dexter's adopted father, and he spotted Dexter's fascination with vivisection when Dexter demonstrated these tendencies as a boy. In flashback sequences, Harry shows the young Dexter how to channel his homicidal tendencies into more "normal" behaviors in order to keep him from, in his words, the electric chair.
Dexter's sister, Debra. Dexter's sister Debra, played by Jennifer Carpenter, has done a notable scary role herself, in the 2005 hit, "The Exorcism of Emily Rose."

Rita. Julie Benz, the actress who plays his girlfriend Rita Bennett, plays a very sweet character on "Dexter." Ironically, she is best known for playing the evil, anything but sweet, vampire, Darla on the TV show, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

Ice Truck Killer. Thanks largely to Debra's tip, the serial killer was believed by police to use a refrigerated truck to store and transport the corpses of his victims. Dexter surmised that a cold environment would be needed to preserve the body and to reduce blood flow. The severed hand of a murder victim was found encased in a block of ice in the back of a refrigerated ice truck located by Debra.

Two underwater treasure hunters happened upon Dexter's watery graveyard while diving off the coast of Miami, and the body parts, packed in heavy duty garbage bags, were recovered by the police.
Because of where the bodies were found, and the method in which they were killed, the press dubbed the mystery serial killer, "The Bay Harbor Butcher".

Sgt. James Doakes. As a result of his habit of following Dexter because of his suspicions that something about Dexter was strange and weird, Sgt Doakes was able to locate the secret cabin in the Everglades used by Dexter, and realized that Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher, After being overpowered by Dexter, Doakes was imprisoned in the cabin. When Dexter's psychotic "soul mate", Lila, found the cabin, she discovered a captive Sgt. Doakes, and started to free him, until he revealed Dexter's true identity to her. To protect Dexter, her secret lover, she decided not to release Doakes, and left the cabin after turning on a propane gas and setting the cabin on fire. Before Doakes is able to escape, the cabin exploded.
Later when authorities arrived and searched the immediate area, a badly burned body is found floating in the everglades next to the cabin., The body was later positively identified as that of Sgt. Doakes, who was assumed to be the Bar Harbor Butcher.
