 Dexter
Rita. Julie Benz, the actress who plays his girlfriend Rita Bennett, plays a very sweet character on "Dexter." Ironically, she is best known for playing the evil, anything but sweet, vampire, Darla on the TV show, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
Prostitute. She poses as a prostitute, putting her in the path of the Ice Truck Killer, who has a penchant for killing Miami hookers by vivisection and draining the bodies of all blood. Unknowingly, after she is promoted to detective she starts dating Ice Truck Killer.
She holds a severed head to his face. After Dexter repeatedly tells Lt. LaGuerta that the confessed killer is a phony, she tests out Dexter's theory. She discovers that he knows information about her promotion to lieutenant available only in a sealed police file and facts about the Ice Truck Killer never revealed to the public. Seems he hacked into the MPD computer system. Next, she plays a hunch and puts a severed head to his face. He starts crying proving he could not be the Ice Truck Killer, who is notorious for cutting up body parts, including heads.
He witnessed a gruesome murder as a child. Dexter witnessed a gruesome murder as a child in which someone is cut up chainsaw-style. This is shown in flashback style.
Miami. The show is set in Miami as Dexter Morgan lives on a boat and disposes of his victims off Miami's coast in the Atlantic ocean.
Dexter's sister, Debra. Dexter's sister Debra, played by Jennifer Carpenter, has done a notable scary role herself, in the 2005 hit, "The Exorcism of Emily Rose."

Sgt. James Doakes. As a result of his habit of following Dexter because of his suspicions that something about Dexter was strange and weird, Sgt Doakes was able to locate the secret cabin in the Everglades used by Dexter, and realized that Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher, After being overpowered by Dexter, Doakes was imprisoned in the cabin. When Dexter's psychotic "soul mate", Lila, found the cabin, she discovered a captive Sgt. Doakes, and started to free him, until he revealed Dexter's true identity to her. To protect Dexter, her secret lover, she decided not to release Doakes, and left the cabin after turning on a propane gas and setting the cabin on fire. Before Doakes is able to escape, the cabin exploded.
Later when authorities arrived and searched the immediate area, a badly burned body is found floating in the everglades next to the cabin., The body was later positively identified as that of Sgt. Doakes, who was assumed to be the Bar Harbor Butcher.

The Bay Harbor Butcher. Dexter would first kill (with a knife or surgical tool) his victim, dissect the body into smaller pieces, pack the body parts in trash bags, and then dump the bags into the ocean.
Two underwater treasure hunters happened upon Dexter's watery graveyard while diving off the coast of Miami, and the body parts, packed in heavy duty garbage bags, were recovered by the police.
Because of where the bodies were found, and the method in which they were killed, the press dubbed the mystery serial killer, "The Bay Harbor Butcher".

lack of blood at crime scene. Dexter was both amazed and impressed that not a single drop of blood was found on or around the severed body parts at the crime scenes.

AB-. In the episode, "Father Knows Best", a flashback reveals Dexter was seriously injured as a child while trying to retrieve a ball for his little sister. The attending doctor voiced concern to Harry Morgan (Dexter's adopted father) that Dexter's rare blood type, AB negative, "was hard to come by", and the "hospital's supply was low". Ice Truck Killer. Thanks largely to Debra's tip, the serial killer was believed by police to use a refrigerated truck to store and transport the corpses of his victims. Dexter surmised that a cold environment would be needed to preserve the body and to reduce blood flow. The severed hand of a murder victim was found encased in a block of ice in the back of a refrigerated ice truck located by Debra.
blood spatter analysis. In the second episode of the first season, entitled, "Crocodile", Dexter identified his occupation while testifying in a courtroom trial as being a "Forensic specialist in blood splatter analyst for the Miami Metropolitan Police Department".
In Dexter's words (and thoughts), "Blood is my life".
