Maria. As the story takes us through the 20th century, we see Maria Wiegand getting old. She is being played by just one actress: Marita Breuer.

Paul's brother is Eduard, who stayed behind in Schabbach as the war raged. Why?"Heimat", Part I

He was too sickly. His hobby is photography.

Next to (or maybe instead of) women, Paul's main interest is what?"Heimat", Part I

Is Maria (the daughter of the Mayor) the first love of Paul?"Heimat", Part I

No. It is Apollonia, an exotic looking beauty. She eventually runs off with a French officer.

Paul marries Maria. They get two sons, Anton and Ernst. Still, Paul feels there is so much more than this rural, not so exciting life. So he leaves his wife and two boys and goes abroad. Where is he heading to?"Heimat", Part II

United States of America. He just tells his folks he's going out to have a beer.

Just before the second World War, Paul announces his return to Germany. He actually arrives in Hamburg. But will he see Maria and his sons? "Heimat", Part II

No. He is refused entrance to Germany, so he can not get off the boat to see his wife and children. He then returns to the United States. Besides, Anton, the oldest boy, is not that keen to see his father.

Before Paul announced his return, Maria had started a relationship with Otto. What was his occupation? "Heimat", Part II

Maria's relationship with Otto has resulted in her having a third son, Hermann. He will go on to do great things. What occupation will he eventually have?"Heimat", Part II

Composer. He was born just before the war.

Being the pride and joy of his mother, Hermann succeeds in shocking her (and her family) profoundly. How?"Heimat", Part II

He has a relationship with an older woman. The fifties, Klara Sisse (pet name Klärchen), works at the factory of Anton. Hermann is (sexually) attracted to her and the feeling is mutual. When this secret is found out, Klärchen is fired and ordered to break off the relationship. However, the two lovers are able to celebrate New Year's Eve in secret before they say goodbye forever. Deeply hurt, Hermann will leave the village, vowing never to return.

Despite his vow never to return to Schabbach, we see Hermann in his hometown at the end of the series. Why is that?"Heimat", Part II

To bury his mother Maria. It is 1980 and Maria has died. Although she was alone in the end, everyone who has been involved with her (and is still alive) returns to be at her funeral, even her estranged husband Paul, who reveals he has never stopped loving Maria
