Queer Eye for the Straight Guy
It's a makeover show.. Five gay men give one straight guy a makeover that includes a new wardrobe, a new hairstyle, new home decor, new cooking skills, and new social skills.
five. They are Kyan Douglas, Ted Allen, Carson Kressley, Jai Rodriguez, and Thom Filicia. Another guy named Blair Something took Mr. Rodriguez's role in some episodes, but I don't know his surname.
People win huge cash prizes.. This isn't a game show--the only "prizes" are elements of the straight guy's spiffy new style.
It is anti-heterosexual.. On the contrary, the gay guys often spruce up a straight man expressly in order to please his wife or girlfriend. The fab five seem genuinely touched when their handiwork makes a woman feel proud and happy with her re-vamped mate.
Thom brings out the best in what's already there, and adds new touches.. This is an aspect of the show that I truly love: instead of trying to change the straight guy's living space into a completely unfamiliar setting, interior designer Thom Filicia has a knack for choosing his "client's" most treasured knickknacks and furnishings and making them look more stylish. He almost always paints walls, and generally spruces things up. Sometimes he buys a few needed pieces of furniture.
Ted helps the straight guy cook or assemble simple gourmet dishes.. Actually, at the beginning of each episode, Ted usually does do a fair amount of making fun of the weird or spoiled items in the straight guy's usually horrendously messy kitchen.
Cute Carson picks out more stylish, less messy clothes that fit the SG's personality.. Carson Kressley, the wisecracking fashion expert, is one of the funniest of the fab five. He's also very sweet, in my opinion.
He suggests a new hairstyle and new haircare products, men's fragrances, and so on.. Kyan doesn't do haircutting himself--at least not on any of the episodes I've seen. He seems to prefer short hair, but he lets men keep their long hair if they and their mates want it that way.
Jai specializes in romantic gestures such as thoughtful gifts and chivalrous manners.. For example, on one show, Jai taught a man who planned to propose to his girlfriend how to say "I love you" in Armenian, the girlfriend's first language.
In a screening room, they watch the SG try out his new skills and stylish image.. I hope you'll watch this great new show. I think it may do a lot to help gay and straight people understand one another better.
Kyan. Also the episode with the NYC cop. This is when John V. and Kyan were getting their airbrushed tan. John told Kyan not to look at him from the waist down, this was partially due to the fact that they were wearing disposable paper skivies (as John V. called them). Kyan pointed to himself and John V. while he asked this question.
Kyan. Manscaping is trimming/shaving/waxing hair to maintain it so it doesn't look like fur, a sweater or worst of all, a forest. Kyan uses the term manscaping whenever they are making over a guy who has a lot of body hair.
Ted. Referred to in question 1 John V. wasn't comfortable using the word "torta", it seemed a little too girly for him. So Ted called it a "man-quiche" to make the dish sound more masculine. The recipe for this torta can be found on the Bravo TV website.
Culture. In addition to Jai, the Fab 5 consists of Carson Kressley (Fashion), Ted Allen (Food and Drink), Thom Filicia (Interior Design) and Kyan Douglas (Grooming).
Carson In Training. In the "Jeff T" episode, Carson trains Jeff's daughter, Christina, to help her dad pick out clothes.
Touch the ends with your index fingers and look in the mirror.
This room should be pink. Pink, I say!. "The Idiot's Guide to Beer" quote was said by Jai, "1984" was Thom and "crack den" was Carson.
Carson Kressley. Carson graduated Magna Cum Laude and was in the honor society, Phi Beta Kappa.
Jai Rodriguez. Jai has also appeared as "Angel" in the Broadway musical "Rent".
Blonde. Jai once said that Carson's hair kind-of looked like Yoda's (from "Star Wars") hair, upon finding a Yoda statue in the straight guy's apartment.
It was clean. All of the toilets the Fab Five had seen had been extremely dirty, except for that one!
'Can they adopt me?'. The Fab Five guys all agreed that that make-over was the most successful one they've ever done.
Culture. One time, Jai took the straight guy to a CD shop and he got to pick out heaps and HEAPS of CD's that he wanted!
Grooming. Almost every straight guy with facial hair has had it all shaved off thanks to Kyan.
Cooking. Ted helps the straight guys make the most AMAZING meals. A few times, when the straight guys were going to make a cake, they didn't have time to actually make the cake, so Ted taught them to decorate the cake with really fancy icing decorations.
Fashion. Before "Queer Eye", Carson was a fashion advisor for Ralph Lauren. No wonder he's so good!
Renovating. He is so good, he can make anything out of almost nothing. His head is full of the most amazing ideas. They must spend so much money renovating the straight guys' apartments!
