World Ends With You, The
The Scramble Crossing. At the beginning of the game, Neku wakes up on the Scramble Crossing with no clue as to why he's there. He also remembers nothing but his name.
When Neku wakes up on the ground of the Scramble, he is holding a black pin with a skull on it. What happens when he uses this pin? | "The World Ends With You" Day 1
|
He can read others' thoughts. The pin is called a player pin and when you use it you can read others thoughts, a trick which you will use constantly through the game. Neku discovers this when he is tossing it and is overcome by a flood of thoughts.
Shiki. After receiving a mysterious text message and being attacked by some giant frogs, Neku runs to the Statue of Hachiko. There he meets Shiki Misaki who yells at him to make a pact with her so they can defeat the giant frogs, and a confused Neku agrees. Together they fight off the frogs and defeat them.
Noise. The Noise are an evil species spawned by emotions such as anger and hate. If you scan with the player pin and tap on the floating red symbols (that sorta look like masks), you will automatically go to a battle.
The Reaper's Game. Neku and Shiki are participating in the Reaper's Game, run by the Reapers who are trying to erase the players of the game. The Noise are their tools of destruction, but they don't miss out on all the action. Their trademark is their black wings. Each of the Reaper's games are one week long.
Go to the 104 Building. Neku and Shiki are to get to the 104 Building in one hour or face erasure. They have timers on their hands displaying how much time they have left to complete their mission.
Red. On their way to the 104 Building, an invisible wall blocks Neku and Shiki's way. Neku then notices a strange figure in a red hoodie watching them. The wall then mysteriously disappears and they continue on.
All of these (Their timers disappear, They see a Reaper, They're attacked by Noise). Neku and Shiki's timers disappear. A Reaper then "congratulates" them and sends some Noise at them. This marks the end of Day 1.
Neku Sakuraba. Neku is usually antisocial, which we can tell in the first few minutes of the game. By the end of the game he seems to have changed, following all the events he goes through and all the people he meets. After finishing the storyline, a bonus chapter is unlocked, containing a parallel world where everyone is different, such as Neku being a bright and cheerful boy who is addicted to a fictional sport.
Reapers. After people die before their time in the real world, most of them are taken to the Reaper's Game, where they fight against the Reapers for a chance at another life. These games were made by the Composer, a mystical entity who possesses great power. The Conductor runs the game for the Composer, and below him are the Game Masters, who are picked by the Conductor to run that week's Reaper's Game. The Game Master controls everything that happens in the game, and below the Game Masters are the ordinary Reapers. There are, however, beings more powerful than the Composer, who are called the Angels.
Orange. Neku's hair is orange, which he does not seem to be overtly frustated or pleased about. Only two main characters in the whole game have orange hair, which are Neku and Kariya.
Shibuya. 'The World Ends With You' is set in Shibuya, a real-life district of Tokyo. Almost all of the places in 'The World Ends With You' are based on Shibuya areas, such as the in-game 104 building, which is based on Shibuya's 109 building. Shibuya was chosen as 'The World Ends With You' setting largely down to it being famous as one of the fashion centres of Tokyo, which is very important in the game.
Sanae Hanekoma. In the third week Neku suspects Hanekoma as being the 'Composer', the being who created the Reaper's game. Hanekoma is very outgoing, and gives you lots of advice during the game. He is also the one who gives you the 'Fusion Pin', which, if used to good effect, can deal large amounts of damage to your opponents.
Shiki Misaki. Shiki fights using a stuffed cat, which herself and her friend made, which can be brought to life and controlled at her will. Neku keeps calling it a 'pig thing', rather than a cat, which Shiki always gets angry at. By the end of the Reaper's game, Shiki and Neku have formed a strong friendship.
Yoshiya Kiryu (Joshua). Kiryu (or Joshua as he is better known in the game) uses psychokinesis to fight, by levitating objects and hurling them at his foes. He is a very smart-alecky boy who gets on Neku's nerves a lot during the course of the game. He is seemingly destroyed at the end of the second week, sacrifising himself for Neku.
Daisukenojo Bito (Beat). Bito (or Beat as he prefers to be called) is a very irrational thinker, diving into things without assessing the situation even briefly. He hates his real name, which is revealed to Neku by a Reaper, and prefers to be called Beat. He fights while on his skateboard, trying to dive at enemies and defeat them.
Rhyme. Put off guard by an easy-sounding mission, Beat challenges Neku to a race to the mission's stated finishing point. However, during the race he is oblivious to the fact that he is being pursued by a large shark Noise, and right before he is destroyed, Rhyme dives in front of Beat, pushing him out of the way, but is in turn erased by the Noise.
Twenty-two. There are three weeks of seven days, with an extra day (called 'Another Day') which is unlocked after the completion of the game. 'Another Day' is set in a parallel world in which everyone is addicted to 'Tin Pin Slammer', a tabletop game which is a bit like 'Beyblade'.
Pink. Unlike many of her colleagues, Yashiro is obsessed with her work. Although she has a fairly low rank among the Reapers, she is a perfectionist in every aspect and strives to move up the ranks. When she is restricted from working hard it drives her crazy. Yashiro, like all of the low-class Reapers (also called Harrier Reapers), has a total disregard for the lives of Players. She values each competitor as little as Noise. She is nicknamed 'Pinky' by several characters due to her hair colour.
Koki Kariya. Although rumoured by several Reapers to have high-level abilities, Kariya prefers to sit back and relax than exert effort in his assignments. During the game, Kariya tells Uzuki that he declined a promotion because being an officer meant that he couldn't be out and about in Shibuya, and he would only spend a life he would see as boring. Kariya spends most of his time playing games with Uzuki which he usually wins. The loser of these games treats the winner to a bowl of ramen. They play these games usually with quite serious subjects, such as finding out the origin of the Taboo Noise. Despite the differences in attitudes and goals, Uzuki and Kariya are friends and work incredibly well together.
Shiki Misaki. In Neku's flashback during the second week, we see that three people made it through the first week of the Reaper's game, Neku, Beat and Shiki. However, Kitaniji says that only one person is allowed back to the real world per week, and that Shiki had 'scored the most points' during the week. She seems to ascend back to the real world, and just after this Kitaniji tells Neku he has to play the game again. Neku's memories are returned, but he is tricked by Kitaniji; Neku gets the thing that now means most to him taken away as his entry fee, which is Shiki Misaki.
No. Beat becomes a Reaper in the SECOND week of the Reaper's game. When Neku, Shiki and Beat all meet Kitaniji after winning the game, Beat decides to become a Reaper, for the reason that when he is in Reaper form he can bring back Rhyme, who died in the first week, to be his Noise companion. However, Beat fights alongside Neku in the third week, and later Rhyme gets turned into a pin which Neku can use.
Red and Black. The Red Skull Pin, or O-Pin as it is known to Reapers, is used in Kitaniji's plan to rid Shibuya of any egotistical thoughts, and make everyone think the same 'harmonious thoughts'. In one mission, Neku has to promote this pin, which leads throughout the story to everyone wearing the pin. The Reapers are told that the pin 'increases their attack capabilities', and so all wear these pins. During the third week, everyone wearing the pins gets brainwashed, and Reapers such as Uzuki and Kariya start attacking Neku and Beat randomly. The pin is equippable in battle, and does nothing apart from slowing you down.
Joshua. Joshua was the Composer a long time before the arrival of Neku into the Reaper's game. He had plans to destroy Shibuya, as all the people were thinking only of themselves, until Kitaniji proposed a game; if he could not rid Shibuya of the envious and greedy thoughts of people, the Composer could destroy Shibuya. The Composer then traveled to the Real World and killed Neku, making him a Player, but erasing all memories of this. The Composer's plan was to use Neku to help him succeed in defeating Kitaniji, and so Neku would, unknown to him, be effectively destroying Shibuya. If you want to know what happens in the end, or already know, play the game through to the ending! Thanks for taking your time to play my quiz.
