Fun Trivia: 1 : 1980s WS

Special Sub-Topic: 1986 World Series

Who was the New York Mets manager in 1986?

Davey Johnson. Davey Johnson was a pretty good second baseman with Baltimore, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and even in Japan. He hit 43 home runs for the Braves in '73. He led the Mets in '86 to a 108-54 record.

Who managed the Boston Red Sox in 1986?
John McNamara. McNamara guided the Sox to 95 wins that year and through a wild LCS.

What teams did the Red Sox and Mets beat in their respective LCS's to make it to the Series?
California / Houston. The Angels led their series 3 games to 1, when they collapsed and lost three in a row to the Sox. The Mets topped Houston in just 6 games, but had to go 28 innings in the last two games of that series.

Boston won the first two games of the Series, both at Fenway?
false. The BoSox won the first two games, but both of them were at Shea. Bruce Hurst shut them out 1-0 in Game 1, and the Sox posted 9 runs with 18 hits in Game 2, winning 9-3.

Who was the starter for the Mets in Game 1?
Ron Darling. Darling pitched well in Game 1, and went 7 innings before being replaced with Roger McDowell. Timely hitting by the Sox beat him, 1-0, with their only run coming in the 7th inning.

What was the name of the Mets catcher in the '86 series?
Gary Carter & Carter. The Kid had 2 home runs, 2 doubles, and 9 RBI in the Series.

How many innings did Game 6 go?
ten. At the end of ninth inning, the score was tied 3-3, and the Sox led 3 games to 2. The Mets won the game 6-5.

In the top of the tenth inning of game 6, Dave Henderson jacked a home run to give the Sox a 4-3 lead. Then Wade Boggs doubled and was driven home by a single to add an insurance run. Who hit that single?
Marty Barrett. Barrett blossomed in the post season collecting 13 hits in the series to record a .433 BA. This followed 11 hits, 5 RBI, and a .367 BA in the LCS. The Mets won the game 6-5.

In the bottom of the tenth inning of game 6, the Sox were leading 5-3, and the first two Mets go out on fly balls. It's looking pretty grim until Gary Carter stroked a single followed by a Kevin Mitchell single. Who got the Mets third straight single?
Ray Knight. Facing the usually steady Calvin Schiraldi, the count was 0 - 2 on Knight when he poked a single to right, scoring Carter and moving Mitchell to third base. It was then 5 to 4, with two outs.

Kevin Mitchell scored the tying run in the bottom of the tenth in game 6. How did he score that run?
a wild pitch. Bob Stanley had relieved Calvin Schiraldi to face Mookie Wilson and Wilson fouled off four straight pitches. Then his fifth pitch bounced past Sox catcher Rich Gedman, allowing Mitchell to race home and moving Knight to second.

In game 6, Mookie Wilson dribbled a ground ball down the first base line. Who was the Sox first basemen that muffed that ground ball allowing Knight to score?
Bill Buckner. Of course it was Buckner, but he was injured and his 102 RBI that year helped the Sox get to the Series. But that error is his legacy, was in spite of a fine career where he hit .300 or better seven times, including a batting title in 1980.

Who was Buckner's back up at first base, who often replaced him that season for defensive purposes?
Dave Stapleton. Some critics still question why McNamara didn't put Stapleton's steady glove in since Buckner had bum legs, but you know what they say about hindsight.

What was the final score of Game 7?
Mets 8 Red Sox 5. After a 24 hour rain delay, the Sox jumped off to a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the final game. But the Mets came roaring back to win it all, 8-5.

Who was MVP of the 1986 World Series?
Ray Knight. Knight hit for a .391 BA in that Series, with a home run and five RBI's. But that single with two outs on an 0-2 count in Game Six kept the Mets alive.

Who was the closer for the Mets in Game Seven?
Jesse Orosco. After fanning Marty Barrett for the final out, Jesse flung his glove in the air and pounded the mound. Jesse had a stellar season with the Mets, winning 8 games and saving 21 more.
