Washington. The common theme here is mountains. The Olympic mountains, and the Cascades. The Olympics are upthrust, the Cascades are volcanic. Mt. Baker erupted about 200 years ago. The Gifford Pinchot, one of the first National Forests, located between Mt. Rainier National Park and Mt. Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument, also includes the stratovolcano Mt. Adams.

Oregon. The common theme here is rivers. The Deschutes begins at Little Lava lake and drains the east side of the Oregon Cascades, flowing north through some spectacular canyons and emptying into the mighty Columbia River. The Willamette flows north draining the west side of the Cascades as well as the east side of the Oregon Coastal Range, and again flowing into the mighty Columbia. Mt. Hood, of course, is the headwater of the Hood River, which also flows into the Columbia.

California. The theme here is BIG! The town of Willow Creek sits amidst the Six Rivers National Forest and is home to BIG FOOT (Sasquatch). The world's biggest trees are in Sequoia National Forest, and the big volcano, Mt. Shasta towers above the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.

In the San Juan National Forest we find the climbers' paradise, the Needle Mountains, as well as archeological ruins of the Anasazi.

The Flathead National Forest has the Mission Mountains, Great Bear, and Bob Marshall Wildernesses, as well as the whitewater rafters' dream, The Flathead Wild and Scenic River. In the heart of the Kootenai National Forest is the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness with beautiful majestic mountains towering over the surroundings.

Utah. Old, old, old. The Ashley National Forest is one of the richest fossil-finding areas in the West. In the Dixie National Forest one can explore the age of the earth, stand on Hell's Backbone Bridge and gaze into Death Hollow. The Wasatch-Cache National Forset is home to the Jardine Juniper, 1500 years old and reputedly the oldest living tree in the Rockies.

Idaho. Fishing or floating. The rugged canyons of the Salmon River in Nez Perce National Forest are perfect for both. The Payette National Forest includes the Middle Fork Salmon River which is known for world-class river rafting. Fish abound in the alpine lakes of the Salmon-Chase National Forest, as well as the Yankee Fork of the Salmon River.

Arizona. Beat the heat. The twelve mountain ranges of the Coronado National Forest range in height from 2400 feet to 10,500 feet, the air really is cooler up there. The Kaibab National Forest is part of the largest contiguous poderosa pine forest in the U.S. (ah, shade!). The six reservoirs along the Salt and Verde Rivers in the Tonto National Forest attract many visitors for a cooling dip.

South Carolina. Both the Sumter National Forest and the Francis Marion National Forest are named after Revolutionary War Generals. Both of these National Forests offer some of the best hunting and fishing available in South Carolina, as well as wonderful opportunites for white water rafters and kayakers.
