    Andre Agassi & Agassi. The first Grand Slam champion (seven titles to 2003) to win Olympic gold, Andre Agassi beat Sergi Bruguera of Spain 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 in the final. Steffi Graf won the women's singles at Seoul in 1988, and was silver medallist four years later in Barcelona.

B: An extraordinary leap on 18 October 1968, propelled what athlete to a gold medal?
    Bob Beamon. Beamon's long jump leap of 8.90 metres still stood as the Olympic Games record in 2003. Beer of the German Democratic Republic won the silver medal (8.19m), and Ralph Boston the bronze. Hans Baumgartner's silver medal jump at Munich four years later, would have only won bronze in 1968.

C: Which British athlete won gold medals in the 1500m in 1980 and 1984?
    Coe. Sebastian Coe won gold in the 1500m at Moscow and Los Angeles, and also took two silvers in the 800m in these Games. After retiring, he was a Member of Parliament for five years, and in March 2000 was appointed to the House of Lords, taking the title of Lord Coe of Ranmore.

D: Who won the 110m hurdles in 1968 at Mexico City? In 1980 at Lake Placid, he was a member of the U.S. four man bobsled team, at the ripe old age of 36.
    Willie Davenport. Not many athletes get to compete in both Summer and Winter Olympic Games, but Willie Davenport was one who did. He also won a bronze medal in the 110m hurdles at Montreal in 1976, but unfortunately, his bobsled team only finished 12th.

E: Who set a world record in winning the 1500m gold at the 1960 Rome Olympics?
    Herb Elliott & Elliott. Australian Herb Elliott's winning margin was 2.8 seconds. His 1500m world record stood for seven years, and he also held the world mile record for nearly four years, until Peter Snell broke it in 1962.

F: What Australian swimmer won the 100m freestyle at three successive Olympics, and also won gold and silver medals in both individual and relays?
    Dawn Fraser. One of the greatest swimmers of all time, Dawn Fraser won 2 gold (100m freestyle; 4x100m freestyle relay), and 1 silver (400m freestyle) in 1956 at Melbourne; 1 gold (100m freestyle) and 2 silver (4x100m freestyle relay; 4x100m medley relay) at Rome in 1960 and in 1964 at Tokyo, won another gold (100m freestyle) and a silver (4x100m freestyle relay), and was 4th in the 400m freestyle.

G: Who was the winner of the men's 100m at Sydney in 2000?
    Maurice Greene. Maurice Greene's winning time of 9.87 was 0.03 seconds outside the Olympic record. He also won gold in the 4x100m men's relay.

H: The winner of the 5,000m in Rome in 1960, what New Zealander was later knighted for his work with a charitable trust he founded to help disabled children?
    Murray Halberg & Halberg. Murray Halberg was the first New Zealander to break the 'four minute mile' barrier in 1958. At the 1960 Olympics, New Zealand won two gold medals on the track on the same afternoon, Peter Snell in the 800m, and Halberg in the 5,000m. Both were coached by the legendary Arthur Lydiard.

    3. Ivanov won in 1956 (Melbourne), 1960 (Rome), and 1964 (Tokyo). Not a bad effort.

    Michael Johnson. The U.S.A. has produced many famous Michael J's, but this one is definitely Johnson! He won his first gold in Barcelona in 1992 in the 4x400 men's relay. At Atlanta in 1996, he won the 200/400m double, the first time in Olympic history that this had been achieved. In Sydney in 2000 he successfully defended his 400m title, and added another gold in the 4x400m relay.

K: What gymnastics 'darling' of the 1972 Munich Olympics, won two individual and one team gold and a silver as well?
    Olga Korbut & Korbut. Olga Korbut of the Soviet Union won the floor exercise and balance beam golds and the silver in the asymetrical bars.

L: Having won a silver medal in the 200m butterfly in 1992, what Kiwi swimmer won gold in the 200 and 400 freestyle events at Atlanta in 1996?
    Danyon Loader. Loader was inducted into the Swimming Hall of Fame in 2003.

M: The final of the men's singles tennis tournament at Seoul in 1988 was between Czech Miroslav Mecir and Tim Mayotte of the U.S.A. Who won?
    Mecir. Mecir prevailed over Mayotte 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2. These Games marked the return of tennis to the Olympic Games for the first time since 1924.

N: One of the greatest male gymnasts of the late 20th Century, what Russian won four golds at the Atlanta and Sydney Olympic Games in four different events?
    Nemov. Russia's Alexei (also spelled Alexey) Nemov, won gold in the vault and combined team in Atlanta, and also a silver and three bronzes in these Games. At Sydney in 2000, he won gold in individual combined and horizontal bar, plus a silver and three more bronzes.

O: U.S. discus thrower Al Oerter won the gold medal in this event in 1956 at Melbourne. How many Olympic gold medals did he win in his career?
    4. Oerter followed his 1956 triumph (at the age of 20) by winning again in Rome in 1960, Tokyo in 1964, and Mexico City in 1968. His feat is unlikely to be repeated ever again in the future.

P: What Irish lass named Mary won gold in the women's pentathlon at Munich in 1972?
    Peters. Mary Peters was born in England of Irish parents. She won the penthathlon gold medal by a mere ten points from Heide Rosendahl, of Federal Republic of Germany.

Q: There aren't too many Olympic gold medallists starting with Q. But Wei Qing-guang won a gold medal in 1988 for table tennis. Which event?
    Men's doubles. Wei won with his partner, Chen Longcan, coming from behind to beat Ilija Lupulesku & Zoran Primorac of Yugoslavia 20-22, 21-8, 21-9.

R: Steve Redgrave of the United Kingdom is the most successful Olympic rower of all time, winning gold medals in how many successive Games?
    5. Starting with a gold in Los Angeles in 1984 in the coxed fours, he followed with golds in the coxless pairs in 1988, 1992 and 1996. Then after saying 'If anyone sees me even near a boat, he can shoot me', he came out of 'retirement' to win his fifth gold medal at Sydney in the coxless fours. He also won a bronze in the coxed pairs in 1988.

S: Peter Snell from New Zealand won the 800m in his first Olympics, and followed this with the 800/1500m double in his second. Which Games?
    Rome and Tokyo. Peter Snell also set a world mile record on a grass track in Wanganui, New Zealand in 1962, followed by world records in the 880 yards and 800 metres just a few days later.

T: Ian Thorpe, a.k.a. the 'Thorpedo', won three gold medals in the pool at Sydney in 2000. What country is he from?
    Australia. Thorpe has set world records for the 200, 400 & 800m freestyle.

U: A young lady equestrienne named Nicole Uphoff won gold medals in individual, and team dressage events at Seoul in 1988 & Barcelona in 1992. Where was she from?
    Federal Republic of Germany. Nicole Uphoff was just 21 at her first Olympic Games in Seoul, when she won her first two gold medals.

V: Lasse Viren of Finland won four gold medals in two successive Olympics. Which ones?
    Munich and Montreal. Viren won the 5,000/10,000m double in 1972 at Munich, and incredibly, repeated the feat four years later in Montreal. He also had fifth placings in the 10,000m at Moscow in 1980, and the marathon in 1976.

W: What New Zealand single sculler who won gold in Sydney in 2000. In 2003, he sailed in Team NZ's unsuccessful defence of the America's Cup yachting match-race series? And now leaving X, go to Y!
    Rob Waddell & Waddell. Rob Waddell won the World Championship single sculls in 1998 and 1999. His wife Sonia also competed at the Sydney Olympics, and finished 6th in the final of the women's single sculls.

Y: Miruts Yifter won the 5000/10,000 metre double at Moscow in 1980. He also won a bronze at Munich in 1972 in the 10,000 metres (in a time faster than his gold medal run eight years later). What country is he from?
    Ethiopia. From Ethiopia, Yifter had to wait eight years for a chance of Olympic gold, after the bronze in 1972, as Ethiopia boycotted the Montreal Games of 1976.

Z: Which Czech won three distance events in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics?
    Emil Zatopek & Zatopek. Emil Zatopek of Czechoslovakia also won the 10,000m at London in 1948, and ended his career with four Olympic golds. He passed away in 2000.
