Special Sub-Topic: Adventure in Peru and Bolivia


As I fly into Jorge Chavez National airport I soon realize I'm in Peru. But what city does major airport serve?

    Callao. Although the airport is Peru's biggest, and is a hub for LAN airlines, it is geographically located in Callao, Peru, only six miles from Lima. The airport serves an approximate six million people per year.

From Callao, I fly to a sacred city to the Incas, located in the highlands Peru. This city is home to Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport. What city am I in?
    Cuzco. Cuzco is often considered the gateway to Maccu Piccu, a ancient city in the cliff edge, Machu Picchu is often considered, the "must see" place in South America.

Leaving Cuzco, I fly to Tnte. FAP Jaime Montreuil Morales Airport in Chimbote, Peru. From there I drive to Yungay, a small Peruvian town at the base of Peru's highest mountain. What is its name?
    Huascaran. Nevado Huascaran is the tallest mountain in Peru, at 22,205 feet. It is only 60 miles from the coast and is located in the Cordilla Blanca range.

From Chimbote, we fly to Inca Manco Capac International Airport in Juliaca, Peru where I feast my eyes on Peru's largest lake. What is this lake?
    Lake Titicaca. Lake Titicaca is the the highest lake in South America, and is the highest commercially navigable in the world. It is located on the border between Peru and Bolivia

From Lake Titicaca, I travel 40 miles to a major town in Bolivia. What is this city called?
    La Paz. La Paz is the capital of Bolivia, at 13500 feet tall. Lake Titicaca, only 40 miles away is 12000 feet tall. La Paz is a wide city, parts of it at 10,000 feet tall and others at 13500 feet.

Bolivia is a medium sized country, but its population is not widely spread. The north and south parts of Bolivia, are widely deserted, but the center of Bolivia contains the larger cities of the country. What is the largest city?
    Santa Cruz. The city of Santa Cruz, is located in the central-east part of Bolivia. It's about 1300 feet tall and is larger than the capital city, La Paz. Santa Cruz is a mere 40 miles from the highlands of Bolivia.

This lake is a lake with a depth of a maximum one meter. It's shape constantly changes due to its depth. The only permanent thing about the lake, is that is is fed by the Desaguadero River, originating in Lake Titicaca. What is the lake called?
    Poopo Lake. Poopo lake is a saline lake located south of Lake Titicaca. The lake is 12,100 feet high, So the Desaguadero River looses 500 feet in 250 miles, making it a slow moving river.

From Poopo lake, I drive south-west to the town of Tomarapi. This town is located on the base of Bolivia's tallest mountain. What is Bolivia's tallest mountain?
    Nevado Sajama. Nevado Sajama, at 21,463 feet is Bolivia's highest mountain. It is close to the Chilean border. The mountain is not a volcano, therefore making Parinacota the highest volcano in Bolivia. Sajama is often considered a volcano, when it's an extinct stratovolcano.

As you might know, Bolivia is a landlocked country, having no access to any ocean. The country borders many other countries, all but one border an ocean. Which country that borders Bolivia, is landlocked?
    Paraguay. Paraguay is a landlocked country in the southern hemisphere. Paraguay's southern border is based on the Rio Parena. Paraguay's capital is Asuncion.

What countries border Peru, but not Bolivia?
    Colombia and Ecuador. Colombia and Ecuador are located in north-western South America, only bordering Peru, not Bolivia. Ecuador is home to Chimborazo. The summit of Chimborazo is the highest point from the Earth's center, not Everest.
