Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the book the heroine, Vanessa March, is asked to accompany a young man named Timothy to Vienna. What is his surname?

Answer: Lacy

Timothy is an important character in the book and is instrumental in the development and resolution of the plot.
2. Timothy's parents are divorced, although both feature in the book. What are their names?

Answer: Carmel and Graham

Carmel Lacy is a self centred and selfish woman, but is the character who sets Vanessa off on the adventure.
3. When Timothy contacts his father, he finds that he has a new, young, fiancee. What is her name?

Answer: Christl

Christl features only briefly, although in a sympathetic light. Annalisa is a character in the novel, associated with the circus which is the centre of the mystery.
4. When Vanessa catches up with her husband, Lewis March, she finds he is using another name. What is it?

Answer: Lee Elliott

Lewis turns out to be a secret agent, investigating a colleague's death at the circus.
5. What is the name of the circus where Vanessa treats an old horse, who is not quite what he seems?

Answer: Wagner

The real identity of the horse forms one of the two major plot lines in the novel. The name of the family which owns the circus is Wagner, and the other choices are also names of German or Austrian composers.
6. Vanessa and Timothy follow the circus and stay at a castle (schloss) converted to a hotel and situated high above the town of the same name. What is that name?

Answer: Zechstein

The villain attacks Vanessa at the hotel and she escapes via the battlements and a lift which enables her to reach the wine cellars.
7. The villain is one of the circus performers. What is his specialty?

Answer: Tightrope

Sandor Balog thinks far too much of himself to be a clown. The liberty horses are Herr Wagner's, and there is no mention of a trapeze artiste. Balog's skill on the tightrope means he is able to traverse the battlements with ease and threaten Vanessa's safety before the lift comes to her rescue.
8. The main plot of the two threads in the novel involves smuggling. What is being smuggled?

Answer: Cocaine

The circus is a good cover for smuggling, being able to travel across country borders which would normally be closed (the book being pre EEC days). The cocaine is hidden in the saddle of the horse rescued by Vanessa and Timothy, thus bringing both strands of the plot together.
9. The climax of the novel takes place at a gasthaus at the top of a mountain. What is the name of the couple who own it?

Answer: Becker

Herr Becker is involved in the smuggling plot, although his wife is innocent. Lewis does not act very well in dealing with Balog, deliberately burning his hand in revenge for the villain hitting Vanessa.
10. The rescued horse turns out to be a long lost Lipizzaner of the Spanish Riding School and the epilogue describes him restored to his rightful place and performing where?

Answer: Hofburg Palace

The title of the book, 'Airs Above the Ground', refers to the 'haute ecole' moves carried out by the horses of the Spanish Riding School. Timothy sets out for Vienna with the intention of finding a job there and his knowledge of their history helps greatly in identifying the horse. The Spanish Riding School is real and does still perform in Vienna.
